You can choose from approximately 120 different varieties of poppy including annual, biennial and perennial flowers. They come in a wide choice of colours - sow a mixture of poppy seeds for a naturalised wildflower garden look, or make a dramatic statement by sowing a single colour en masse. Its blooms are quite like meadow wildflowers, as they are bowl-shaped and occur in shades of pure white and in gentle, bright tones of yellow, orange and scarlet. There are several types of poppy, from the annual Papaver rhoeas, called the field poppy, corn poppy or Flanders poppy, and which includes a specific type called Shirley poppies, to those large-flowered, perennial Oriental poppies.The wild corn poppy brings a bright splash of red to fields, but it looks great in gardens too. It is perfect for providing colour in a sunny situation where little else will grow, and for creating cottage gardens and is excellent for attracting bees and other pollinating insects. The crinkly-petalled, bowl-shaped flowers can reach up to 15cm across and are a snowy-white colour with a conspicuous bright golden centre. To harvest seed pods, cut when the pods turn light brown and dry out for 1-2 weeks before breaking open and storing seeds in a jar for up to two years.

Poppies are not usually troubled by a wide range of pests and diseases, though they can sometimes be troubled by aphids. Mix in more organic matter with the excavated soil and fill in the planting hole. Water in well, apply a granular general feed over the soil around the tree and add a 5-7.5cm (2-3in) deep mulch of well-rotted garden compost or bark chippings around the root area. Advice for buying poppies

Dig a good sized hole, big enough to easily accommodate the rootball. Add a layer of organic matter – such as compost or well-rotted manure – to the base of the hole and fork it in. Papaver rhoeas poppies are naturally much smaller than other poppies like opium poppies that you might grow. If you don’t want poppies to self-seed remove faded flowers before they set seed – It’s a good idea to prevent oriental poppies from setting seed as it reduces the energy to produce more flowers.
