About this deal

Frodo tries obfuscating, but Strider appears to know exactly what had happened. He invites Frodo to speak with him later, saying he has something to tell Frodo that is of some importance to him. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: In the movie, the inn appears to be frequented only by suspicious-looking men; no hobbits are seen, and the atmosphere is more ominous than it is in the book. Barliman Butterbur arrives, and the guests begin questioning him about Frodo's disappearance. Frodo then steps forward to show that he hasn't vanished, saying that he'd simply crawled away under the tables. The guests don't buy this story, and grumble about the quality of the evening's entertainment. They soon leave one after another, until none are left but the Hobbits, Strider, and Butterbur. If you’re thinking of heading out for a walk in the Cotswolds, Moreton-in-Marsh is easily accessible on the Monarch’s Way trail. Bree is a meeting place for the two very different worlds of the Shire and the rest of Middle-earth. Both Hobbits and Big People (humans) live there in relative peace, and there is always a steady stream of travelers of all kinds. Frodo, therefore, feels uneasy when the gatekeeper guarding the entrance to Bree takes a curious interest in the hobbits. The hobbits enter the Prancing Pony, the local inn, and announce themselves to the innkeeper, Barliman Butterbur. The hobbits seem to remind Butterbur of something, but he cannot quite place it.

Although the scene is not officially marked as an extended scene, a few lines of dialogue are in the extended edition but not the theatrical cut of the film. One is the Gate Keeper remarking that the hobbits are "out of the Shire, from your talk," and another is Butterbur stating that he is "always proud to cater to Little Folk." Tolkien, J. R. R. (1954a). The Fellowship of the Ring. The Lord of the Rings. Boston: Houghton Mifflin. OCLC 9552942.It was the perfect meeting point as it was located halfway between the homes of the two Tolkien brothers! Butterbur points out to Frodo a particularly weather-beaten individual called Strider. The innkeeper says that Strider is a Ranger, a wanderer among the northern lands. Strider makes some pointed comments, and Frodo begins to wonder how much the man knows. Frodo suddenly notices that Pippin, who has had too much beer, is telling the crowd about Bilbo’s birthday party—and getting very close to telling the part about the Ring.

The Hobbits take their ponies into the courtyard, where they encounter Barliman. After introductions, Barliman seems to recall something related to four Hobbits, but can't remember what it was. He apologizes that the inn is quite busy, indicating that it is an unusual situation. He finds them a room suitable for hobbits and has their ponies taken to his stables. Tolkien Calendar 2015, June: 'The Inn at Bree', "Miss Fairburn recalls that Tolkien told her the lanterns should be on the beams, not between them." Alan and all his co-hosts are passionate Tolkien enthusiasts, and they invite listeners to enjoy their detailed exploration of Tolkien’s work, with smart but straightforward discussion and a healthy dose of self-effacing humor, pop-culture references, and bad puns. These are the folks you'd want to hang out with at a pub and talk Tolkien with.David Weatherley". RBA Management. Archived from the original on 30 March 2022 . Retrieved 25 September 2020.

Here is an interactive map of Middle-earth. Here are some other maps: Eriador, East-West Road, Bree-land. Frodo's conversation with Butterbur, in which Butterbur reveals that Gandalf had told him to be on the lookout for a hobbit traveling the name of Underhill, and had given him a letter to deliver to Frodo, is omitted. According to Barliman Butterbur, the inn has existed almost as long as Bree has and has been in the possession of the Butterbur Family for many generations. [14] On a rainy night, the four hobbits arrive at the western gate of Bree. They are let in by the Gate Keeper, but Frodo declines to state their business. They make their way through the streets to the Prancing Pony, where they are greeted by the innkeeper Barliman Butterbur. Frodo gives his name as Underhill and asks about Gandalf. Butterbur informs them that Gandalf has not been seen for six months. While having a drink and wondering what to do next, the hobbits notice a man sitting in the corner staring at them. Frodo asks Butterbur who the man is and is told that he is a Ranger called Strider. If you did fancy stopping by the town of Bree, you only need to head to Moreton-in-Marsh. This is in the county of Gloucestershire in the Cotswolds. In The Chronicles of Narnia: The Horse and His Boy, a fantasy novel by Tolkien's good friend C.S. Lewis, published the same year as The Fellowship of the Ring , Bree is the name of a main horse character who could talk. Between the wings was a courtyard that was accessible through an archway. Under the arch a few steps on the left led to main door. Above the arch was a lamp that illuminated the sign beneath, which showed a fat pony rearing on its hind legs. A white-lettered inscription over the door announced "The Prancing Pony by Barliman Butterbur". Read the chapter today or some time this week, or spread it out through the week. You have put your foot in it! Or should I say your finger?" ― Strider
