Shoei J•O | Something of a benchmark in open-face lids, it has a drop-down sun shield and a great quality lining. Arai RX-7 Evo | Considered by many to be the pinnacle of full-face sports helmets, the RX-7 offers excellent venting, though it does come at a premium price. If you’re a little bit short on money at the time, the cheapest way to attach your GoPro camera to your helmet safely is with a vented helmet strap mount. Caberg Flyon | The Flyon is another true ‘jet’ with a full-length visor. It appears to be discontinued now, though they are still available in stores at some good prices. Our riding instructor reviewer was impressed.
This mount is compatible with all kinds of helmets that are vented, ‘cause is precisely through those venting holes that you’re going to attach the mount to your helmet.Sena Savage | The Savage seems to have been discontinued, and we’re struggling to find any for sale. Which is a shame, as it’s a really great – if plain – open-face helmet with good quality Bluetooth comms built in. And a few owners have said the pre-Evo helmets have a nice wide field of view which is great for added awareness as you’re riding. Helmet Noise (more about helmet noise) There’s a single chin bar vent and single forehead vent on all Momentums – including those with a top mounted camera. All can be closed by nice big fat sliders that are mega easy to find and operate. Recording faces of people without their consent. If your intention is to do some content for YouTube or any other kind of online video platform, make sure that, if you film people’s faces, you’re doing it so with their consent. Otherwise, that can get you into some unwanted legal problems. HJC C80 | The C80 is both an adventure lid with a peak, and a flip-front. Some Goggles will fit, but it’s not designed for them, and we did find the peak shook at speed on some bikes.
And it’s got Shoei’s excellent 5 year warranty (or 7 years from manufacturing date). Overall/Summary Overall, owners seem to find the basic helmet quite a noisy helmet (for a full face) – with the Momentum Evo being a slight improvement over the other helmets. Not overly scientific – Sena says graph shows it’s quieter than some other helmet by an undefined amount. Wow, thanks for the insight!An open-face, or ‘jet’ helmet is great in the summer, and the favourite of many custom, cruiser and even trail-bike riders, but it has no protection on the front so your face is vulnerable to stones and bugs (you’d be surprised how much a bee can hurt at 70mph). You do also need to be aware that in a crash, an open-face lid is far less protective than the other options.
Schuberth C5 | We loved the C5 for several months and many hundreds of miles, but the visor mechanism did grow more loose, and a problem with serious fogging (despite correct fitting of the supplied Pinlok) showed up in extremely cold and wet conditions. There are still a lot of reasons to recommend the C5 though. That’s a basic headset that allows for connection with up to 3 other riders and a 1 mile range (under perfect conditions).
The aerodynamic scoops and stabilisers remain from the X-Spirit 3, though they’re reshaped around the bottom to better cut through the air.
