Sometimes their arrest had little or nothing to do with the fact that they were lesbians. At other times, their sexuality may have played a role. This was especially the case regarding arrests prompted by denunciations. Denunciations frequently affected people considered social outsiders. Denunciations of Lesbians During the Weimar Republic , German society experienced complex social, political, and cultural transformations. On the one hand, the Weimar Republic was defined by political turmoil and violence. It was also a time of economic distress. On the other hand, Germans had greater political and social freedoms. The atmosphere gave rise to artistic movements, an expanded press, and increasingly visible alternative cultures.

Those prosecutions disappeared later in the nineteenth century as the silencing of lesbianism became stricter. Respectable women were increasingly assumed to be sexually innocent and either passive or desireless. The best way to stop them trying a lesbian relationship was to ensure they were unaware of the possibility. Nonetheless, an Old Bailey judge in 1885 1 considered it obvious that the indecent assault of one woman by another was an offence – and thus there was an age of consent since the law stated that girls under thirteen could not give consent. That was confirmed by the Court of Appeal in 1934, by which time the age of consent was sixteen. 2 She walked in slowly, her head lowered. A few years later, Radclyffe Hall’s novel The Well of Loneliness was found obscene because it suggested that lesbianism should be tolerated rather than condemned. The following year, 1929, ‘Colonel Barker’ was identified as Valerie Arkell-Smith and convicted of perjury for marrying a woman under their male name. United States: A TV news report on school CP, Feb 2012. Schools in rural Texas explain their paddling policies, for which there is local support. A senior high-school student says he prefers receiving CP to other punishments. In Punjab, half a dozen prisoners are disembarked from a police van and given a public paddling in the street.
