This folklore about the role of the divine in forgiveness may well be the conventional wisdom and defining mantra framing debates about ‘the unforgivable’ in political and social life. The magnitude of human atrocities, in other words, ‘radical evil’, places these crimes beyond the realm of human intervention – human beings can neither punish nor forgive them; they fall in the province of divine prerogative, only God may judge them. These views, however, may have to be set aside in light of the lessons learnt by our generation, a generation which has witnessed a plethora of public apologies for atrocities by world leaders, from Pope John Paul II, to Bill Clinton and to Jacques Chirac. Expressions of forgiveness by victims of some of the most egregious violations of human rights in the past century seem to gesture us to the position: To forgive is human.This short assessment presents a series of questions to help clients identify areas where their thinking is rigid and instances when they might benefit from relaxing perfectionist tendencies. To break it down, here are eight steps you can take to work toward self-forgiveness (Cornish & Wade, 2015; Griffin et al., 2017): One of the strongest reinforcers to my faith was finally grasping what it actually meant when other Christians would say, “Jesus loved us so much he died for our sins.” As a child, if I’m being honest, I struggled with what that meant. How could someone die for my sins through an act of forgiveness, and more so, how could this happen if the event was in the past, ancient even. In this one, you attempt to describe a new interpretation of the situation based on the principles of Radical Forgiveness. In other words, you write that you now realize that the person was, at the soul level, acting out of love by doing what they did because it was what you (your soul) wanted to experience. It is even likely that you and the other person had agreed up front, prior to incarnation that he/she provided this experience for you — a soul contract in other words. All you are now able to feel towards this person is gratitude.

The road to self-forgiveness is winding and bumpy. Some people will naturally find it more difficult to forgive themselves than others, but we are all capable and worthy of self-forgiveness.Naming emotions provides space, and emotional regulation helps you identify and learn from your feelings. This is important for forgiveness, where you need to be aware of the hurt, anger, and grief you may be facing. 3. Shifting perspectives The first three are more or less the same as conventional forgiveness. We first explain how we were victimized while becoming present to our feelings about what happened. Then we do our best to bring to the situation understanding, compassion and empathy for the person we feel hurt us, and perhaps even imagine walking in their shoes for a while. Anytime! Radical forgiveness does not need any kind of ceremony. Most people would just sit down, reflect, and mull over what had happened to them before finally forgiving in their hearts.
