The scientific investigation will be based on dead hedgehogs placed in front of approaching robotic lawn mowers, to record exactly how the machines react towards the hedgehogs. Do they detect them, stop and change direction, as they are supposed to? The dead hedgehogs in the study will be collected from hedgehog rehabilitation centres, where they were sadly too poorly to save. By using them for this project, the dead hedgehog will not have died in vain as they will instead help the living population. The hedgehog researcher will investigate whether it is only special types of robotic lawn mowers with specific features that are causing the injuries, and if e.g. only smaller, juvenile hedgehogs are in danger of being injured or killed by the machines. Based on the results of the study, Dr Sophie Lund Rasmussen will collaborate with the producers of robotic lawn mowers to develop more hedgehog friendly models. Hedgehog's simplest maneuver is a "yaw," or a turn in place. After pointing itself in the right direction, Hedgehog can either hop long distances using one or two spikes or tumble short distances by rotating from one face to another. Hedgehog typically takes large hops toward a target of interest, followed by smaller tumbles as it gets closer. Test the Code: Test the code by running the hedgehog and observing its movements. The basic concept is a cube with spikes that moves by spinning and braking internal flywheels. The spikes protect the robot's body from the terrain and act as feet while hopping and tumbling. But that’s all part of the fun, and it gives kids a sense of accomplishment when they complete the project. They’ll learn about gears, motors, microcontrollers, sound sensors, LEDs, and more. Sending a robot to space is also much cheaper than sending a human. Robots don’t need to eat or sleep or go to the bathroom. They can survive in space for many years and can be left out there—no need for a return trip! The majority of hedgehogs may simply run away and thereby avoid collisions. Our research does not definitively answer the question of how dangerous these mowers are to live, wild hedgehogs. When it comes to building your own robotic hedgehog, having the right materials and tools is key to success. Scientists hope to someday use a robot like this to search for signs of life on icy bodies elsewhere in the solar system.
