Description

Rosie's Hat is a story of the adventures of a hat after it gets blown away from Rosie and ends up in some unusual situations. CREST is a a nationally recognised scheme for student-led project work in the STEM subjects. CREST grants are available to support and enable schools and organistaions to run CREST Awards with young people underrespresentedin STEM. Depending on whether you have any adult support, at some stage you may want to join the younger children for a period (so that you can ‘play, observe & ask’) and ask your teaching assistant to supervise the older children’s activity. I think the problem with Julia Donaldson books is that there is an expectation they'll all be like her most popular rhyming stories and this one isn't. I didn't enjoy it and the children didn't think much of it either. The story seems boring compared to others from this author and although the way the book has a sentence followed by some sound words like woof, whoosh etc. is a nice way to show the journey of the hat, the story didn't keep our attention much at all. Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta.

In the classroom this book can be used to teach knowledge retrieval skills, there are plenty of opportunities for discussion and questions due to the amount of detail in this book. Themes which arise are associated with loss and retrieval. Rosie being a firefighter is a fairly crucial part of the plot. One blustery day, her hat gets blown away from her. She doesn't manage to find it that day and her hat, presumed lost for good, ends up being used as all kinds of things** as it floats around, waiting for her to grow up, become a firefighter, and be called to rescue a cat who is caught up the tree where it eventually lands. Its journey has come full circle and, in a sense, so has Rosie's as she has gone from being that little girl in a little red coat to, if I remember correctly, getting married and having a child of her own.***This resource focuses on the teaching and learning of science in Early Years (ages 3-5 years) through play. Shaw-Williams, Hannah (7 November 2019). "Doctor Sleep: Rose The Hat & Shine Vampires Explained". Screen Rant . Retrieved 3 February 2020.

Balkovich, Robert (30 June 2020). "Why Rose The Hat From Doctor Sleep Looks So Familiar". Looper . Retrieved 2 February 2021. Let the younger children (ages 4-5 years) choose their activities. If you have a supporting adult in the classroom, you might want to ask them to manage/observe a particular activity and you could provide them with a list of open-ended questions to develop the children’s thinking and specific science vocabulary. There are many ways for children in early years to record their learning. To begin with, look at opportunities where pupils can orally question, clarify, retell or recount their science learning using podcast audio apps or recording audio or video on tablets. These can be saved using QR codes to go on displays in the investigation area so the children can watch and learn from each other, or to share learning across the setting.

My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes.
