For many families, bicycle trailers for children constitute an important addition or alternative to the car. They replace the classic luggage carrier-child’s seat. Parents can transport their children in a fun and environmentally-friendly manner. At the same time, children are protected against things such as rain, wind and falls. Vergleich.org has tested various models and identified the best. The price-performance winner with the grade of ‘Very Good’ comes from the brand SAMAX. For additional context, our 2-year-old, 38.5″ tall rider (seen below) has the shoulder straps set to their lowest point and its a pretty perfect fit. Inside the trailer, our 5-year-old and 3-year-old testers had about the same amount of space side to side as another popular trailer on the market – the Burley D’Lite X. The Burley has a bit more headroom and legroom, but this will really only come into play as kids get much older.

The trailer manufacturers also advise that children wear helmets while riding inside the trailer itself, which I found impractical, but ymmv. The passengers are well protected by belts, a sturdy steel frame, and a roll bar. The high-quality suspension which flexibly compensates for unevenness on the road is a further advantage. The cover is made from two layers. One layer provides space for plentiful air exchange with its integrated fly screen which also keeps insects and small stones away, while the other consists of a transparent, but sturdy film. Sitting under this ensures that the children travelling with you don’t get wet when it rains. The mesh front door and the rain cover secure tightly in place at the bottom of the trailer with a hook and loop closure. This system is extremely easy to use and easily one of our favorites. It includes two individually rollable layers – one with an insect screen – the other with a clear plastic film. Furthermore, the 2in1 bike trailer has a small storage space behind the seat. Like the Burley Encore X, the height of the shoulder straps is on the higher end, making the Traveller a better fit for older toddlers to 5 year olds. The bicycle trailer can also be taken apart to save space. It then becomes small enough to fit either on a shelf in the garage or in the boot. If desired, the trailer can be taken on holiday or to your favourite jogging or walking spot further afield. On the right, you can see her at about 18 months in the Burley, which has a similar set-up. The shoulder strap starts almost above the ear. While this is considered safe, neither trailer is a great fit for a child this young.

Compared to the Burley Encore X: The Encore’s single stroller wheel is at the end of the tow arm, putting the wheel several feet in front of the trailer. While this set-up works just fine, if you’re going to be doing a lot of strolling with your trailer, the Traveller’s set-up is much better.

When testing the trailer I accidentally zipped too far up and the zipper head slid right off the zipper. While I was able to get the zipper head rethreaded and working again without much hassle, it was unnerving and frustrating. You falling off while towing is only bad in that it's quite embarrassing, your kids will simply look on comfortably, probably in bemusement. Smooth ride - Balance is sometimes an issue for riders using child bike seats, particularly rear-mounted ones. Thanks to the articulated arm, those who use trailers find that it feels like a completely normal ride (other than the extra weight!). The Traveller was a relatively smooth ride in trailer mode, although there was a small tug every now and then that I could feel jerk against my bike. With some trailers you can honestly forget you’re even pulling anything because the trailer performs so seamlessly with your bike. That was not the case here, but was certainly not so annoying that we wouldn’t recommend it.

SMOOTH ROLLING & SAFE: An EVA universal wheel and two 20" inflatable wheels of the bike trailer for children provide a smooth ride and are off-road friendly. Brakes on the rear wheels can be easily parked by keeping them tight. Reflectors and flags ensure visibility in traffic and low-light conditions.
