Opgewonden, met een gevoel alsof elke seconde telde, trok Florence haar schoenen uit en rende ze het strand op. Toen ze besefte dat het uit kiezels bestond, bleef ze staan om haar schoenen weer aan te trekken. Maar Rupert was net zo ongeduldig als zij. Hij sloeg zijn armen om haar heen, tilde haar op en liep met haar tot buiten het bereik van de lantaarns. Max’s life in the 1980s was also interesting although I’m not sure I was quite as invested in his story and the reasons for his restlessness. Maybe I’m not a believer in what this book purports to be about although I could see it would be a comforting idea for those who have lost people. Sante Montefiore heeft met Naar de overkant weer een heerlijke roman geschreven. Vanaf het begin af aan zit je meteen goed in het verhaal, je wordt als lezer eigenlijk direct opgenomen in het gezin van Marigold en het plattelandse dorpje waar ze wonen. Marigold staat centraal in het verhaal, maar haar man Dennis en twee dochters Suze en Daisy spelen ook een belangrijke rol. Ze hebben allemaal hun eigen verhaallijn binnen het grotere geheel waardoor het verhaal speels blijft. Marigold maakt echter wel de meeste indruk binnen Naar de overkant. Moeder van twee dochters en eigenaresse van een winkeltje in het dorp wat ze met veel passie runt. Wanneer ze op een gegeven moment dingen begint te vergeten, wordt dit op haar leeftijd gegooid. Het wordt echter al meer, totdat de diagnose Alzheimer vastgesteld wordt. De langzame achteruitgang hierna wordt heel mooi beschreven door Sante Montefiore. Niet alleen het proces wat Marigold zelf meemaakt, maar ook wat dit voor invloed heeft op de rest van het gezin. Op welke manier ze proberen haar te helpen om toch nog zo zelfstandig mogelijk te kunnen zijn. Maar ook het moment dat Marigold niet meer thuis kan wonen en op een gegeven moment haar man niet meer herkent. Dit wordt op een zeer intense manier beschreven. Liefde is dan ook het centrale thema in het verhaal, de onvoorwaardelijke liefde tussen Dennis en Marigold, maar ook de liefde die Suze en Daisy hebben in hun relatie met hun partner. Der Roman besteht aus 29 eher kürzeren Kapiteln. Erzählt wird überwiegend aus der Sicht von Marigold, aber auch aus anderen Perspektiven. Der Aufbau funktioniert gut.

De jonge Florence is al zolang dat haar geheugen haar brengt smoorverliefd op de knappe Aubrey Dash. Maar wanneer Aubrey's oudere broer Rupert, haar op een avond verrast met een liefdevolle kus, lijken Florence gedachten wel alle kanten uit te gaan. Tot wie behoort haar hart toe? Als de oorlog roet in het eten gooit en Florence's grote liefde voorgoed van haar wegneemt, gelooft Florence onverschrokken in de belofte die haar ooit werd gemaakt. Wait for Me” is set in England in the early 1940s and the late 1980s as well as Australia in the mid-1990s.

I also feel this way about the other members of Marigold's family. Dennis just has a heart fo gold and you can tell he is absolutely besotted by his wife. I enjoyed meeting Daisy and Suze. I wasn't sure about them to begin with but their lives are very real and very like my own and I totally warmed to them and lived this whole story line through their eyes. Then we have Nan who is definitely hard to like but when you get down to the roots of her ways, you can see that she does have her daughter's best interests at heart.

I found this an enjoyable and compelling read and I was keen to find out how the 3 timelines came together. The ending was pleasant but not particularly unexpected. I would describe this as a moving romantic novel with a slightly unusual twist. When Rupert Dash is declared missing, presumed dead during the Battle of Arnhem, his wife, Florence, is devastated. She can't accept that he has gone from her life forever, and so when she finds a poem called 'Wait for Me' hidden in an old book, she believes it's a sign from her husband. A promise that he will return to her. An dem Roman hat mich gereizt, dass es nicht nur um Liebe und Familie geht, sondern auch um die Demenz-Thematik. Das macht die Lektüre emotional bewegend.

Re-incarnatie is iets waar ik niet erg voor openstond of in geïnteresseerd was en ik weet niet of dat zal veranderen. Maar dit boek is erg respectvol en mooi geschreven. Het zou zo gebeurd kunnen zijn. Het wordt nergens zweverig. Max, Florence, Rupert zijn personages die de lezer aanspreken. Het wordt ook niet eng, het is geen boek vol geesten. Het is een boek dat gaat over mensen. Het idee van de reïncarnatie laat Max echter niet los en hij gaat er zich uiteindelijk in verdiepen - op zoek naar antwoorden. Hij komt de juiste personen tegen die hem allerlei boodschappen geven en hem sturen en met behulp van zijn familie stuit hij tenslotte op de familiestamboom langs vaderszijde. Als hij uiteindelijk alle puzzelstukken samenlegt komt hij bij Rupert Dash die gesneuveld is tijdens de Slag van Arnhem ten tijde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij wilt er alles over weten en hierdoor maken we een vlucht naar de geschiedenis - de oorlog met Hitlers leger als onze vijand. Hij reist zelfs naar Nederland om dezelfde streek te bewandelen waar destijds ook Rupert heeft gewandeld in de hoop iets van zijn vorig leven te voelen. Eenmaal hij Ruperts graf heeft gevonden treft hem een bijzonder moment dat de rest van zijn leven zal bepalen.

I loved all the characters in this book, especially the villagers with their love for Marigold and who all rally together to support her as she encounters life with the symptoms of the disease. I enjoyed reading this even with the knowledge that it wasn’t going to be the happy ending I was after; however, I applaud Montefiore for bringing to light some of the devastating facts of Dementia in a wonderfully written book. I just hope one day we manage to develop some sort of cure for this dreadful disease. Das hübsche Cover hat zwar nur einen indirekten inhaltlichen Bezug, gefällt mir allerdings gut. Der deutsche Titel ist etwas irreführend, da es nicht nur um Marigolds Töchter, sondern auch um sie selbst geht. In diesem Fall ist das englischsprachige Original („Here and Now“) treffender. I spent the last 10-15% absolutely sobbing, so if you want to get your heart ripped out, this is the perfect book for you. This was a truly captivating read. I began with curiosity and trepidation but finished with an open mind. Montefiore is an auto-read author for me and this book confirms why I love her work so much. The book is beautifully written, full of wonderful characters, some happy and some grumpy (Nan), humour (moles, christmas puddings etc), love (pink roses) and romance. At the time of reading this in July 2020, many of us are currently anxious about the global pandemic, a virus we cannot see whilst we also have an unseen condition which steals the memory of people that we currently cannot protect ourselves from. However, as the title suggests, we need to live in the here and now, to enjoy the small things – the birds singing, the food we eat, time with family and friends.
