Description

With RAI, Camilleri worked on several TV productions, such as Inspector Maigret with Gino Cervi. In 1977 he returned to the Academy of Dramatic Arts, holding the chair of Movie Direction, and occupying it for 20 years. This book was beautiful. I can't think of any other way to describe it. The story, the characters, the words themselves. It was all beautiful. The best way I can think of to describe the way this book made me feel is I'm a shoreline and the words in this book are the waves in the ocean, coming and going, each time leaving something, but also taking something with them when they leave. Beachum, Chris (December 28, 2017). "Octavia Spencer ('The Shape of Water'): 'Otherworldly and beautiful' themes are 'very relevant for today' [Complete Interview Transcript]". Gold Derby. Readers do get to enjoy a few extra perks in prose form, however, namely being able to get into the heads of the characters, thus gaining more insight into their thoughts and emotions. Supporting personalities like Zelda, Giles, and Mr. Hoffstetler were all better developed, and once or twice, we even get brief glimpses into the mind of the amphibian man himself. Since neither he nor Elisa could speak in the film, audiences were limited with regards to the interpretion of what the characters were thinking or feeling, but this was obviously not an issue in the book where readers were actually able to experience the story from their perspectives.

After all the various "making of..." books I have read you start to see a bit of pattern form (I am sure I have eluded to this in the past) from the art work heavy catalogue style where really all you have are a series of images used (or not) in one form or other during production. To the other extreme where really you have the story of the product with a few images thrown in to justify its digest size printing.

The variety of perspectives, including that of the fish-man, makes the story richer. It not only helps in a finer understanding of the strange connection Elisa and the fish-man share, but also deepens the reader’s attachment to the precious and fragile world that Elisa and Giles create in their sparse lodgings above a movie theatre. Access to their innermost thoughts and fears makes their efforts to find beauty in an ugly world all the more heroic, as they try to light up their lonely and difficult lives with music, laughter, love and friendship.

It can be read easily. The chapters are short and the situations (locations, feelings, dialogues) are so well and detailed described that they reminded me movie scenes. Each chapter corresponds to a scene and it mainly has one main character or two main characters on the spotlight. The movie is wonderfully atmospheric of the time with beautiful music. The novel (for me) was even better....creepier....with more storyline....the villain more evil....with del Toro's usual ewwww moments, BUT....I would have been a bit confused at the start had I not first seen the movie. Three years before The Shape of Water was released, del Toro met with composer Alexandre Desplat to talk about the film's premise. In January 2017, Desplat was shown a rough cut of the finished film, and finding it similar to a musical, he agreed to compose a score. As a result, Desplat tried to capture the sound of water extensively to have audiences experience a "warm feeling" that is also caused by love. In an interview, he said the melody from the opening scene was "actually made of waves. I did not do that on purpose, but by being completely immersed in this love and these water elements, I wrote a melody that plays arpeggios like waves." [25] a b "The Shape of Water – Review: The Shape of Plagiarism of director Guillermo del Toro". Indie Cinema Magazine. January 22, 2018. Archived from the original on August 28, 2019 . Retrieved August 28, 2019. Writing the film score took six weeks; it was purposely composed to create the sense of immersion and to give the "sense that you, yourself, are floating". The two melodies, one titled "Elisa's Theme", are heard at the beginning of the film and later merge into a single piece of music by the end of it. To emphasize this effect and its final result, Desplat changed the sounds of the accompanying flutes, accordions, and whistles to "something blurred". On composing the score overall, he said that it was "a matter of sculpting the music and making it take the shape of the storyline." As a result, Desplat opted out of giving Shannon's character a melody. [25]

She works at the Occam Aerospace Research Center as a janitor with her friend Zelda Fuller ( Octavia Spencer). During their daily night shift, a vessel is brought into the facility containing a valuable asset. Elisa goes near the vessel, and something bumps against it from inside.
