Bone Collection: Animals by Rob Scott Colson. Like his other title in the collection, Skulls, this title focuses on the skeletons of a wide variety of animals. Pretty cool to look at and very informative. Great for kids in grades 2-6. Little gets bored with the quiet life on the dark, dark hill. So he decides to go to the city before he gets worried about Big and Dog getting lost. "There are too many skeletons" says the Big Skeleton in the city and even the underground has them. But everyone in the town is in bed, and in the end, they still haven’t frightened anybody. So the little skeleton suggests that they frighten each other instead. Allan always dreamed of being a writer, but tried his hand at many other jobs before he achieved his ambition. He was a postman, grave-digger, plumber's mate and teacher - it was teaching that gave him such sharp insights into the minds of children, and enabled him to write his perfectly observed poetry about primary school life

Allan has collaborated with many illustrators, including Andre Amstutz, Gillian Tyler and Katharine McEwen, as well as his late wife, Janet Ahlberg (nee Hall) and his daughter Jessica Ahlberg. He has won numerous awards for his books including, the Kurt Maschler Award in 1986, The Children's Book Award in 1987, the Blue Peter Book Award 2001, and The Children's Book Award: Books for Young Children award 2002. Full disclosure: I read this book as part of my work, and listened to the audio book at the same time. The audio book gets 5 stars, and the text itself and illustrations get 4 stars from me. I enjoyed this book! It was fun even for me as an adult. As autumn whispers through the trees, it’s a great time to gather your young readers and explore the fascinating world of bones, be it the human skeleton or the amazing bones found in the animal kingdom. Not only are there plenty of Skeleton children’s books and bone books out there, there are also lots of fun activities you can complete with the kids to extend their learning and interest in this topic. This book is pretty near perfect, both for children just starting to learn to read, and older ones too. Using the setting of a walk to the park and to the zoo, creates familiar situations for young children. The text is easy to read, and the repetition aids fluency. It is enhanced by the illustrations, which are as humorous and quirky as the story itself. It is very, very funny. I love reading a good spooky story with the kids at Halloween time and I'm really into pairing up fiction and non-fiction reads for my kids when they are sparked by a topic. They love Halloween and that has led to their interests in all things skeletal — bones, skulls, and skeletons galore. Over the years, we've collected some favorite Halloween-themed books and some really cool books about bones and skeletons. Mr. Bonehead: The skeleton owner of the pet shop (who wore a bigger hat called a flat cap with a pencil and an apron), who Big and Little took Dog into with a view to swapping him for another pet etc. in the episode "The Pet Shop" and everything else in other episodes. Funny bones by Janet and Allan Ahlberg is one of my most favorite childhood books!! The book is about…”a big skeleton…a little skeleton…and a dog skeleton…” one night all three were bored in bed and decided to go outside to “scare somebody”. The story goes on, the skeletons walk past the houses on the street, and the shops, and past the zoo, and past the police station and finally go to the park where they look for someone to scare!
