Description

In particular, I highly recommend the Spanish Conversation edition which uses authentic dialogue examples to get you speaking better Spanish. Each of the twelve sections begins with a natural dialogue and then goes into some really helpful (and challenging) exercises.

There’s a common misconception out there that textbooks are just for nailing down the nuts and bolts of language. You know, for when you need to write and write sentences over and over until you start to understand how correct Spanish should sound. We know you know how Spanish should sound. That’s why we’re going way beyond the basics with these books. There is consistency in the way that the material or the sections are presented although some chapters contain more sections than other so the instructor has to think about how much time to dedicate to the chapter as it might not be the same for each. All chapters start with a reading and an introduction of the goals for the lesson and end with a glossary of used words and personalized vocabulary. It’s organized into 12 themed units that cover various aspects of life like people, housing, food, recreation and more. Conversemos! Intermediate Conversation” (Let’s Talk! Intermediate Conversation), is another official college textbook. Keep reading to find out why these books made the cut, considering that we’re avid language learners here at FluentU who have experimented with a myriad of Spanish resources. Best Books To Learn Spanish in 2023 In the grammar and verb-focused workbooks, the creators did a fantastic job of gradually teaching and integrating vocabulary while focusing on the grammatical topic.

The book is broken down into chapters and smaller sections of presentation and practice. The initial chapter presentation, however, is of a brief cultural reading that is disjointed from the actual content of the chapter. It would be nice to have chapters be presented in thematic terms instead of just "Chapter 1" , "Chapter 2", so that the general nature of the information presented is clear from the start. Also, these introductory cultural readings go way over the students' skill level from my perspective, as they use vocabulary and structures that the student could not yet comprehend based on what material the student has seen at that point. they are not accompanied by any helpful vocabulary, glossing, pre-reading activities, nor comprehension questions. This book is organized into 12 units that present realistic conversational situations like making introductions, giving opinions, going on a date or telling a story. Which ending you choose depends on the pronoun that comes before the verb ( yo, tú, él/ella/usted, nosotros, vosotros or ellos/ellas/ustedes) and the tense.

16. Irregular Spanish Verbs

Each new language is undoubtedly a challenge, so it is important to apply techniques and strategies that are beneficial and effective. Remember that much of our learning is by imitation; this way you will be able to familiarize yourself with the correct pronunciation and phonetics. You can speed up your Spanish learning progress on your own by combining traditional learning (like textbooks and online courses) with at-home immersion methods, like we discussed above. The Spanish Practice Makes Perfect collection is a full series of different books for Spanish that cover pretty much everything you can think of related to Spanish. The language in this book is simple and the grammar explanations are clear and easy to understand from the point of view of the student. The visuals and images in each section contribute to the clarity that the book offers. It is nice that there are links to videos and audios that contain questions and practice with native speakers so that students can clearly understand the materials presented in the section. The structure of each chapter is consistent throughout. It starts with a cultural reading (which doesn't flow well as a chapter intro - see below), statement of objectives, a pre-chapter activity, presentation of several grammar topics with practice activities after each, vocabulary presented where needed, I can statements, objectives review, and vocabulary list.

The chapter contents are nicely divided into smaller sections so they can be assigned in sections. Some chapters are longer than others and in some chapters, there are too many grammar concepts included. However, even the longer chapters can be divided into manageable sections. By the way, be prepared for some good laughs when you find out the Spanish equivalent of some of our English expressions. Discovering that “the last straw” is translated into “eramos mucho y parió la abuela” (we already were a big group of people and then grandmother arrived) is priceless! 6. “Larousse Diccionario de sinónimos, antónimos, e ideas afines”Now let’s see what some -er and -ir verbs look like when conjugated, using aprender (to learn) and vivir (to live) as examples: Pronoun This series is really popular with Spanish learners and it’s not hard to see why. 2. Spanish Short Stories For Beginners – Olly Richards If you are tired of looking for options to help you efficiently learn Spanish, here is the option for you. Sometimes it is exhausting to look for apps or videos that satisfy our concerns. Ultimate Spanish Beginner-Intermediate” is designed to teach you Spanish from scratch—no previous experience required. But if you do have some previous experience, this book carries you right into the intermediate level. There’s a follow-on edition to this (admittedly I haven’t seen this one but have heard it’s just as good).

Dictionaries are just that—dictionaries. Books full of text, words, definitions and without pictures. It isn’t meant to be used as a learner’s guide, but rather a comprehensive, technical, systematic grammar manual for language professionals and aficionados. Those of us who are language teachers, translators, writers or linguists who speak European or Latin American Spanish may appreciate the linguistic depth of this book. The book is well organized and follows a typical two semester introductory course. One thing I noticed is that it covers the Imperfect tense before introducing the Preterit which is unusual in textbooks that I have used or I am currently using. Overall, I think the text has a consistent organization that is logical and clear. Plus, the vocabulary and verbs introduced are based on spoken frequency to ensure you start communicating and understanding as soon as possible.

2. Noun Pluralization

The text includes a cultural reading in each chapter. I noticed that the level of those readings is beyond student’s understanding, and also the texts do not include comprehension questions and do not dig deep into the topic so I would have to include my own cultural information. I do not find the book offensive or insensitive in any way. In fact, it discusses the highly gendered nature of the Spanish language in a way that makes it inclusive of transgender and non-binary individuals. Old-fashioned, I know, but books are some of the most valuable tools you can use while learning Spanish—they don’t expire, you don’t need a monthly subscription, they’re in-depth and they’ve been trusted for decades.
