The significance of Superman cannot be understated; it created an icon for its lead actor who simply was the character, so much so that in many peoples' eyes, Christopher Reeves is still superman. The film set the mould for not only future Superman films but for nearly every comic book character origin story. But more than that it is effortlessly charming, wholesome and personifies the hero in super hero. By placing character before action, and plot before punch-up, Superman is a genuine classic of the genre. which left him paralyzed, a situation that probably inarguably led to his own early demise. Part of George Reeves' problem may have been that he For my own thoughts, I quite literally grew up on the Christopher Reeve Superman films. He was and remains my hero. Of all the celebrities to have passed over the years, his was the one where my day stopped and I truly mourned. While there have been fine actors to step into the suit over the years on film and television, Reeve defined the character for decades and made us believe that not only a man could fly but he could save the world. This first film from Richard Donner set the high bar for all comic book movies to follow at a time when it wasn’t the major genre burning up the box office that it is today. This production was a risk, and it paid off beautifully. 5/5

Based on the DC character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the Superman films star Christopher Reeve as the legendary “Man of Steel.” This isn’t to say that I think Superman III is a total failure. I grew up with this movie and I still enjoy a lot of it as a middle-aged man. There are chunks that feature some of the best Superman action on film to date - the chemical plant rescue remains a fantastic tension-filled action sequence showcasing Superman’s range of powers. The split personalities of Superman is another excellent sequence exploring his dual personalities in raw form. It’d been something if they could have gone full Bizzaro Superman but this was still very good. And then that final robot villain genuinely gave me nightmares as a kid. It was years before I actually saw the end of the film because I’d leave the room screaming when I was little. Watching it again, it’s still unsettling so I can only imagine what it did to kids who saw it in theaters. was so closely identified with the character of Superman that he felt he couldn't escape (few even remember his film career, which included a Director Richard Donner began shootingSuperman IIwhile concurrently filmingSuperman: The Movie, though the theatrical version of the film was ultimately directed by Richard Lester. In 2006, Donner’s original unique vision was released for the first time. Jor-El (Marlon Brando in footage cut from the theatrical version) appears in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the relationship between father and son. Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) plots more schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman (Christopher Reeve). With so many changes, large and small, including a different beginning and resolution, this version is an eye-opening alternate experience.

Our sources suggest that—like Superman: The Movie in 4K—all three of these will feature Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, but we’ll have to wait and see. Superman The Movie was shot using Panavision cameras on 35mm film. This 2018 UHD release was made using the original camera negative which was scanned at 4K resolution and has been utilised for this Ultra HD Blu-ray release. The disc presents a native 4K 3840 x 2160p resolution image in the widescreen 2.40:1 aspect ratio, and uses 10-bit video depth, a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG), High Dynamic Range, and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec for HDR10 and Dolby Vision. We reviewed the Region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Superman on a Panasonic 65DX902B Ultra HD 4K TV with a Panasonic DMP-UB400 Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Finding a being as strong as Superman, to take him on credibly, has always been a problem since he is all powerful. To enable defeat, or at least the threat of defeat and peril, the villain has to be more powerful still. And Lex’s plan is a clever one, but, again, it is executed so poorly. With particular regard to Nuclear Man’s weakness, seriously, shade? Dude, if you are going to the moon, put him on the dark side, problem solved! Being able to pierce Superman’s skin and infect him should have definitely been made more of. Likewise, the defeat and recouperation, where was the emotion in that? The iconic shot of the red cape falling should also have been on the poster! Superman is on UK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as a standalone 4K release and now as part of the Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary Studio Collection from 16th October 2023.

with rather similar last names, as has been discussed ad infinitum by some more devoted conspiracy theorists. George Reeves, beloved Taking Flight: The Development of Superman – 30 minute feature covers reasonable ground with plenty of interviewees talking about the film’s pre-production development.Superman I-IV 5-Film Collection 4K Blu-ray delivers great video and superb audio in this enjoyable Blu-ray release Meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a naive computer-programming natural. For him, a keyboard is a weapon – and, as a result, Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. Christopher Reeve reprises his signature role, deepening his character’s human side as Clark Kent sees Lana Lang (Annette O’Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. And when the Man of Steel becomes his own worst enemy after exposure to Kryptonite, Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling skill. Relive Superman III with all its heart, heroism and high-flying humor.

The enduring adventure spanning the Man of Steel's life, from his Krypton infancy and Midwest boyhood to his career as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent, and through his titanic struggle with archnemesis Lex Luthor. This is information I first heard from industry insiders about six months ago, but was asked to keep quiet about to allow the work to be completed. But retailers are just now starting to catch wind of it, so I can unofficially confirm it here: While I have fun with Superman III, I don’t often pull it off the shelf. Truthfully I actually more often will watch Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. I think it had been the better end of a few years since I last sat down to fully look at Superman III and my opinion remains middling. There are a lot of pieces that work beautifully, but those opening credits and other sequences like them are so stupid I end up having to skip them. Lester got a lot of shade for his contributions to the franchise and a lot of it is earned. For every great decision and impeccably executed heroic sequence, there are several confoundingly stupid and unfunny pieces chunked in there. All right, we’ve been waiting for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to make their official announcement of this release, and now they finally have. Here’s the studio’s press release... Audio Commentary – With executive producer Ilya Salkind and producer Pierre Spengler, who were recorded during separate sessions and spliced together to create a whole. While the two are certainly proud of the film, their respective discussions concentrate on the production of the film in terms of budgets, publicity, money made, money spent, disagreements, and are a side not often spoken about on commentaries; not for everyone, but has a certain amount of entertainment value.

all had fairly substantial budgets, and whilst there was a gradual cheapening of the scripts due to a change in director, there was, at least, an attempt to bring the iconic character some gravitas, and present a story that is worthy of the subject. Unfortunately that didn’t happen with the fourth instalment; following on from the dumbing down of part 3, part 4 scrapes the bottom of the barrel. Decisions made behind the scenes impacted significantly on the finished product, such as reusing effects, or editing down to 90 minutes from a 2-hour film, means that it looks shoddy, doesn’t flow well, remains poorly edited, and feels rushed. The characters have become nothing more than a pastiche of their former selves, and almost unrecognisable, while the script, which does have some terrific ideas, in the end doesn’t make sense. But it also set the mould for superhero movies for all time. Origin stories pretty much follow the path laid down here. It made a cultural icon of Christopher Reeves, an actor so perfect for the role, and a person so much the part that in most peoples' eyes he is still Superman. The suit was the correct colour, his actions were driven by uprightness and he perfectly stood for ‘truth, justice and the American way’. Despite the tortured filming set, the heart was in the right place and the script was perfect; there is a wholesome charm about the piece that modern films simply don’t possess. The film is character, rather than action, driven. Superman’s immense strength is shown but not at the expense of fighting and his moral compass is on point. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially set The Woman King for release on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD on 12/13. Ultra HD Blu-ray showcases 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and a wider color spectrum, offering consumers brighter, deeper, more lifelike colors for a home entertainment viewing experience like never before. As previously mentioned, this is exactly the same transfer as the 2018 disc. There was some internet butt scuttle that Superman: The Movie would yet again get a new 4K scan and restoration, but I never saw anything confirmed or denied from Warner Bros. If a new scan/restoration happened, it’s not here leading me to doubt that it ever did happen or that if it did, it didn't yield any improvement. Bit for bit this is the same Dolby Vision/HDR10 transfer - which I’m perfectly okay with. This film always had a soft diffused, dreamy look thanks to Geoffrey Unsworth’s signature cinematography (Reginald H. Morris who shot A Christmas Story and Murder By Decree in a similar fashion was also in the camera department under Unsworth). While it’s naturally soft-appearing, there are still impressive details to soak in and enjoy. I thought this was a beautiful transfer five years ago and I still think so today. Superman II

Editor’s Note—4 PM Update: WBHE has replied with the following answers to the questions we posed for clarification: 1) Superman: The Movie 4K utilizes the same video master as the 2018 UHD but now includes the original theatrial audio mix (Comment: We believe this is in DTS-HD MA format now, where as the 2018 4K offered it in lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital. –BH). 2) Superman: The Movie includes Dolby Vision HDR while the sequels include only HDR10. All have Dolby Atmos. 3) No single-film 4K SKUs are currently planned in the US.] Santa Claus: The Movie was shot in the mid-Eighties, but could easily pass for the preceding decade. Still, with a half decent shot-on-film production, it's hard to go wrong when serving up a decent 4K image. So it's extra hard to understand quite where they went wrong here. It's not even like there was some confusion over what kind of treatment this film has been given - it's clearly marketed as a Brand New Native 4K Restoration - but the term seems extremely loose, with the film coming across distinctly as one of the less impressive niche archive titles gracing the format.
