About this deal

The Orks box has the dubious honour of being the only Start Collecting without a legal HQ choice in it, thanks to force organisational changes in 8th edition. The contents aren’t terrible however and if you’re building an Ork horde you’re going to need savings wherever you can get them. Nobz may not be an especially optimal unit for Orks right now, but it’s an extraordinarily characterful kit full of useful bitz. Given the species’ vigour and strength of will, being thrashed by servants of the Emperor of Mankinddidn’t leave the T’au particularly disheartened. Instead, the Ethereals set their Empire on an accelerated course for technological advancement, rapid expansion, and massive rearmament. Skipping across the surface of the Warp like pebbles across a lake – and so unable to use it for interstellar travel – the T’au are so far confined to a small part of the galaxy, with no true idea of the vastness of the forces of their foes, nor the dangers that lurk in the Immaterium.

Contents: 1 Farseer (HQ), 5 Wraithguard/Wraithblades (Elites), 1 Wraithlord (Heavy Support), 1 War Walker (Heavy Support) The old version of this with the Kabals stuff in felt a lot better than this one does. That said, you can at least get somewhere with this – all of Succubi, Wyches, and Venoms are good units you’ll want for a budding Drukhari army, and Reavers are OK I guess. What would have been really nice is if instead of replacing the old box, we got something like the Daemons of X boxes for Kabals, Covens, and Wych Cults, but alas. GW dropped word that prices on some of their products would be going up after February 4th, 2018. With that said, the new prices increased by around 7% on average. So Start Collecting’s still aren’t a bad option in general, but the margins on value are indeed smaller.Savings-wise this is decent, but the contents are rubbish. You don’t ever really want Tactical Marines and Baal Predators don’t offer much either. This really suffers from including the Predator – it would be a much better box if it had say, Death Company instead. Feels like a relic of 3rd/4th edition. This Tau set also fits in perfectly with any pre-existing army. The Ethereal works great as a commander and the Fire Warriors and Drones will always be useful. In a pinch, you could even use the XV8 Crisis Battlesuits as an unofficial commander!

Contents: 1 Watch Captain Artemis (HQ), 10 Deathwatch Veterans (Troops), 1 Venerable Dreadnought (Elites), 1 Deathwatch upgrade sprue These tokens give bonuses to hit when you shoot at the marked unit, allowing a canny T’au commander to easily unloadoverwhelmingfirepower into an important target. Vehicles, Drones, and Pathfinders are especially good in this role, as they’re able to move before applying Markerlights, extending your range and thus reinforcing the Tau’s tactical mobility. You can double down on this by playing as the Farsight Enclaves subfaction, as they automatically treat enemies as having a Markerlight when within 12 inches. Contents: 1 Tech-priest Dominus (HQ), 10 Skitarii Vanguard/Rangers (Troops), 1 Onager Dunecrawler (Heavy Support) It’s an interesting mix of battlesuits and favors the stealthy aspect of the Tau game play style. Using the Pathfinders, the Ghostkeel, and the Stealth suit team to get marker lights on a target for the Battlesuit Commander and Broadside battlesuit to destroy at range would be a very typical way for a Tau unit to operate. I imagine that the Ghostkeel and the Broadside are listed as squads in the formation, and you can add additional suits to those teams (up to formation limits). How does this interact with the start collecting set for Tau? Let’s take a look. There is one flaw in the T’au’s armour, however: they have no psykers among their ranks. This means they’re not only unable to manipulate the Warp on the battlefield, but also have no astropaths – severely limiting their ability to move using faster than light travel.

The Nurgle box is pretty good value. If you’re collecting Nurgle Daemons you want Plaguebearers and Nurglings en masse, and at least one Poxbringer too. If you’re going to buy those things, you might as well buy this box, and basically get the Plague Drones for free. A very respectable set which gives you pretty much what you want to get going with the faction – perfect. Take a look at the full list of values now after the increase and decide for yourself if the savings is worth the contents now! This is hopefully a complete formation that you can play right out of the box (once it’s assembled). It contains the following: His admech are ten rangers, ten vanguard, dunecrawler with Icarus, tech priest dom, and a unit of sicarians infiltrators. Rangers are split into two units of five with the big AT rifles. T’au armies work best when working as a cohesive whole. Models such as the Darkstrider can mark priority targets, giving nearby units a buff when shooting at an enemy. Another example of T’au synergy is their crucial Markerlight mechanic, a buff that allows any unit with the Markerlight keyword to pop tokens on an enemy at the start of the Movement Phase.

Contents: 1 Herald on Blood Throne/Skullcannon (HQ or Heavy Support), 10 Bloodletters (Troops), 3 Bloodcrushers (Elites) What’s more, while their clean aesthetic and apparently progressive ‘ Greater Good’ philosophy can sometimes seem like something beamed in from a different universe, lore hounds can still find a healthy dose of grimdark lurking beneath the T’au’s shiny, armoured shells. That’s it for the 40,000 sets, we’ll start the Age of Sigmar stuff soon. Happy Gaming, Happy Holidays Game Fans I have been using my CP to their best effect and he rarely touches his. I think his list is just built better than mine, but since we are about to up it to 1000 points, I have a chance for a better built list. Originally I thought to just buy another start collecting but he said he is going to buy another start collecting for his army as well and I fear I’ll run into the same problems. I’m thinking about getting a riptide instead but not sure if that’s the best option. What do you guys think I should go with?

Tech-priest Dominuses have fallen out of favor recently, which is a shame because Ad Mech still field Vanguard and Rangers on a regular basis to fill out Battalions and the Dunecrawler is a legitimately good unit that sees lots of competitive play. It’s still a great boxed set to start building off of, but some of the savings are mitigated by the fact that you probably won’t want a Tech-Priest Dominus in your army. For example, their supreme mobility allows them to take objectives rapidly and harry the enemy. Smart commanders can combine this with rules that bolster shooting on the move, such as the Mont’ka Tactical Philosophy, to give you a gunline that never stays still, while still enjoying bonuses you’d normally get for remaining stationary. Deadly and fast – a dangerous combo. Contents: 1 Terminator Captain (HQ), 10 Tactical Marines (Troops), 1 Venerable Dreadnought (Elites)With the Ethereals firmly in charge, the T’au became truly united and their technological progress leapt forward, propelling them into the heavens. Protected by their army – known as the Fire Caste– settlers began to take over systems and assimilate other species under the banner of the Empire, in successive ‘spheres of expansion’. This is another strange box as GW made it so you would almost need another Start Collecting to reap the full value from the box. The only place you can actually get Venomcrawlers, Greater Possessed, or the new Obliterators, the new SC: Chaos Space Marines is a pretty decent deal, even if those were available elsewhere. Every single unit in the box got a points drop in Chapter Approved 2019 and the only stinker in the box is the Master of Possession (and you can proxy that as a Sorcerer with most players). You can also get by pretty well without the units in this box however, so it’s also not particularly necessary to buy.
