I'M NOT EVEN GOING TO TALK ABOUT KUROSE PROCLAIMING HE LOVES SHIROTANI BECAUSE CLEARLY THIS IS NOT HOW YOU SHOW THAT YOU LOVE SOMEONE! I don't read much manga (honestly it's just too darn expensive), I was scrolling through some manga online on a whim and I came across Ten Count. Shamelessly, I was entranced by the bishie on the cover. :D But what I got is a really heartwarming and pretty deep look at the relationship between two guys, one with Mysophobia, and the other of whom is a psychiatrist. The television anime was originally scheduled to premiere in 2020. The anime was then postponed because the staff was reconsidering the series' development form. I would implore any new reader to set aside any preconceived notions about the manga and truly try to experience the anticipation and angst that is depicted beautifully in this manga. I've read it 3 times and all 3 times, I ended up crying because of how beautifully they fit together. They need each other. It's almost painful to imagine how much.

The additional offense is misogyny. The main reveal of the series is that everything is the fault of a pubic-hair-twirling evil rotten woman our pure heroes need and will punish. The whole event is so unrealistic and weird, that it is clearly just an excuse for a bogeyman, who also happens to be the only major female character. And revenge feels like a cheap and unfitting solution for a manga about therapy with pretense of psychologism. Kurose asks him to write a list of 10 things he is reluctant to do—thus beginning his course of exposure therapy. Yet, Shirotani wonders why Kurose would show such kindness to a stranger. After all, the two have barely met, and Kurose does not deny the accusations of an ulterior motive.

THE PLOT: A man in his thirties suffers with acute mysophobia (a fear of dirt and filth) and meets a therapist from a mental health clinic who volunteered to help him with his crippling affliction. The therapist puts him under what is known as 'exposure therapy'. To do so, the therapist had the mysophobe write down his Top 10 list of the things he is not comfortable doing and brings him the most anxiety; with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Item 10 was left blank, and this is where the patient's trauma stems from which we will later find out more as the story progresses. Nov 24 Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space Releases an Update Featuring a New Episode 'The Cliffs of Wyrmrest (Wryz Saga I)' on November 24 Sadly, the intended purpose for this manga was for some sexy times to commence, and therein lies the problem because I get the sense that author Takarai-sensei must really want to expand on the inner conflict her protagonist is struggling with but since this is published as a yaoi, she had to comply to the demands of editors to put some sexy stuff already because who wants to read about believable character development dealing with a phobia anyway?

This is still an ongoing work, mind you, so I'm careful not to have a very definitive opinion about the narrative just yet although I must say that this has a very promising premise and it might have been a more compelling, emotionally mature read if it was published as a josei work and not simply a yaoi material. But of course, I might be reading into it too much. It is very plausible that the mangaka has not done research into these ethics. At the same time it is possible that she knows about the ethics and decided to break them on purpose. Considering how well she writes Shirotani, I am inclined to believe that she has Kurose breaking ethics on purpose. Characters are more realistic when they have flaws, and this is an obvious one. Because I haven't read or seen much yaoi/BL stuff before, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I know every form of relationship has its smut around and its fetishist stuff, but to be honest, I really was surprised at how much this manga developed the story and relationship, not just jumping straight into "well they met and talked and then had sex". Which makes it very...satisfying, I guess? when they do get down and dirty. We've seen these two guys dance around their feelings for one another, so it feels meaningful both to the characters, and to the reader. a b c Hodgkins, Crystalyn (March 26, 2018).
