I went to college between doing U.S. military service and getting work in comics, and there was a psych class and I came up with Thanos, (inspired by Sigmund Freud's concept of human Death drive, or Thanatos), [1] but I'm not sure how he fit into it, just anger management probably. So I came up to Marvel, and editor Roy Thomas asked if I wanted to do an issue of Iron Man. Space Elves: The Eternals of Titan tend to fit the trope: Long-lived, scholarly, reclusive, ancient, mystical, powerful and usually robed. Yes, I just called Thanos insecure. And yes, I am terrified he’ll appear behind me and tear me in two (at least let me finish this review–I have deadlines, oh glorious titan!).

Not only is Thanos physically dominant, he knows how to use his strength. He is an extremely skilled combatant, both in hand-to-hand combat and using weaponry. Before he got the Infinity Stones, he went from world to world, conquering and killing half of the population. Dramatically Missing the Point: The notion that killing people will never get Death to love him doesn't ever seem to have crossed his mind.
