About this deal

But The Sandman, AKA Daniel Miller, isn’t home. Instead, his wife Carrie is there alone, professing no knowledge of what her husband has been up to. Delaney is moved by the obviously shaken woman’s protestations of innocence, until the search team finds something that makes the agent see Carrie from another angle – and to immediately arrest her. Soon Carrie Miller is the most hated woman in America, and in the absence of her multi-murdering husband all eyes are trained on her forthcoming trial as an accomplice to his crimes.

Eddie has been hired for the case after the original lawyer, Otto Peltier, finds himself over his head in such a serious case. Eddie’s only rule when deciding whether to take cases is that he must be convinced the defendant is innocent. But when the rest of the country is baying for his client’s blood, convinced she is as guilty as her husband, it’s clear that this is going to be an emotional case.Cavanagh was in the zone when he was writing The Accomplice, and I deeply enjoyed how the entire story came together. Like most of Cavanagh’s novels, the pacing in The Accomplice was spot on and the reader is never really given a chance to relax or put the novel down, which ensures that they try really hard to get through everything in one go (it worked on me). There was an excellent blend of styles throughout The Accomplice, and Cavanagh once again did a great job of combining the darker subject matter of a disturbed killer, with the lighter scenes that focused on Eddie Flynn’s outrageous behaviour. The scenes focused on the Sandman were particularly dark and gripping, especially as you get to see directly into his diseased mind, and the use of them throughout the novel really helped to amp up the drama and threat, while also moving the narrative along in some impressive directions. Likewise, you get some intriguing and powerful character driven scenes from some of the other major characters, such as Flynn’s investigator Bloch and newcomer Gabriel Lake, as they get obsessed with finding the Sandman and bringing him to justice. Eddie is inclined to say no and walk away, but his team of Harry, Kate, Bloch and even the office secretary, Denise, seem to think otherwise. Over time this disparate bunch has bonded like family and make truly formidable opponents. Just as well, because they’re going to need each other as the story progresses. A meeting with Carrie convinces Eddie that she is telling the truth and he steps into the lion’s den. But with only days to go until trial, how will he pull this one off? The Accomplice is a cunning, breathless and bloody tale in which nothing is quite what it seems. Steve Cavanagh tells it with such relish you're not sure whether to gasp or guffaw

Eddie Flynn won’t take a case unless his client is innocent. Now, he has to prove to a jury, and the entire world, that Carrie Miller was just another victim of the Sandman. She didn’t know her husband’s dark side and she had no part in the murders. But so far, Eddie and his team are the only ones who believe her. Daniel Miller murdered fourteen people before he vanished. His wife, Carrie, now faces trial as his accomplice. The FBI, the District Attorney, the media and everyone in America believe she knew and helped cover up her husband's crimes. Book 7 in the Eddie Flynn series based in the lawyers hometown of New York, this one was an absolute blast. Eddie and his team become involved in the trial of Carrie at the very last moment when her lawyer’s forced to recuse himself. Eddie is reticent but fellow lawyer Kate, former judge Harry and firm PI Bloch convince Eddie to meet Carrie and he believes in her innocence so takes her on. Paige Delaney of the FBI is outside an expensive house in Old Westbury, New York. They are hunting the Coney Island Killer otherwise known as The Sandman who to date has killed 17 victims and has a grotesque and unique signature with sand. They have reason to believe the Sandman is wealthy hedge fund manager Daniel Miller, he’s not there but his wife Carrie is. She is arrested and six months later indicted by the grand jury on six counts of homicide as she is considered his accomplice. Otto Peltier is her lawyer but he’s not a criminal lawyer and so he pleads with Eddie and his team to take the case but Eddie takes some convincing to accept. Like many others Eddie is full of questions. Is Carrie innocent? Has she been duped and betrayed by Daniel? How can you not know your husband is a serial killer? Kate believes Carrie is a victim too but many a Joe Public believes she’s guilty so would she ever get a fair trial? The team are up against it with this one but let’s face it, when are they not??!!

Customer reviews

Book six, The Devil’s Advocate, earned five stars on Crime Fiction Lover, where it was declared “the best Eddie Flynn book yet” – so does The Accomplice manage to reach that very high bar? I was itching to find out. Well this case really puts Eddie’s skills to the test. With 2 days until the case starts Carrie skips bail. Without her testimony, there is near zero chance of getting her acquitted. But Eddie has to win this case to save a life that is dear to him. Zelfs Eddie Flynn...
