About this deal

This is one of the more cleverly plotted murder mysteries I have read. Throughout the book the reader is led on numerous trails of who the suspect may be. When the killer is revealed, however, it comes as a bit of a surprise. Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent (somewhat to their surprise) are once again partnered by their superior officer and sent to the scene of a fire in which one of the bodies may have political repercussions. The Burning, is an excellent follow up, with a psychologically interesting plot and complex, well-drawn characters Irish Independent

Delving into real human emotion whilst being a fantastic crime read, I cannot recommend this series highly enough to crime lovers. It's well written, the plot is tight and exciting, the pace is steady but really hold your attention and before you know it you are at the end and ready for another in this great series. Born and brought up in Ireland, Jane read English at Jesus College, Oxford before going on to study for an MPhil in Anglo-Irish literature at Trinity College, Dublin. After working in publishing for nine years, commissioning bestselling children’s books, Jane decided to start writing herself, both in the crime genre and for young adults. Being married to a criminal barrister provides Jane with unique insights into the brutal underbelly of urban life, from the smell of a police cell to the darkest motives of a serial killer – experience that give her work a true sense of realism.Summary: A serial killer's on the loose in London. Young women are not safe out at night but the latest victim, Rebecca, leaves a very interesting tale behind and it's up to energetic and ambitious police detective Maeve Kerrigan to fit the pieces of the jig-saw together - with some surprising results along the way. DC Maeve Kerrigan is on the team working the case of a serial killer who is preying upon young women in South London, killing them and then burning their bodies. Maeve is a complicated character and has her own issues which will add to the series interest and give her a lot more depth as a character. I'm looking forward to the next to see Maeve's growth. No need to wait if so inclined as the series, set in London, have all been released in the US. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan.

This was SO GOOD. I love Maeve, and while I hate the way so many things are going in her life, this was still SO GOOD. Rob. It makes me desperately sad, but Derwent is RIGHT in calling that non-consensual sex what it was, and if there's any way for Rob to be redeemed it HAS to be through Maeve's stopping taking on responsibility for what he did. It's true that her not telling him about the near gang-rape on the estate indicates a different relationship problem, but that wasn't the cause of Rob's behaviour. Lest anyone who hasn't read the books is wondering why I would ever say that someone who essentially raped their partner *might* be redeemable and the relationship still have some hope for a future, Rob had the MOST severe trauma - pretty much instant PTSD. I thoroughly enjoyed this book; far more than I was expecting in fact, as it turned out to be more of a psychological thriller than a straight forward serial killer crime read. I found it fast-paced and I cared about the characters. If you are looking for a hard-boiled thrills-and-blood-spills book then you won’t find it here: The Burning Man is almost a side plot from what is really going on. Maeve is such a hugely warm character with just the right mix of vulnerable and feisty. Will definitely be looking out more in the series’ Tammy Cohen, author of When She Was Bad Loved it. 5 paw prints from Booklover Catlady for this one. Add it to your list, in fact add the whole series to your list.Maeve is such a hugely warm character with just the right mix of vulnerable and feisty. Will definitely be looking out more in the series' Tammy Cohen, author of When She Was Bad The conclusion worked perfectly. It was quiet, but very, very effective, and there was a nice little sting in the tale.
