About this deal

Every effort was made to create the finest possible presentation for today's audiences who can watch the films using technology that has advanced dramatically since 2007 when the last restoration was completed by eminent film historian and preservationist Robert Harris. Using that work as a blueprint, the team spent thousands of hours to ensure that every frame was evaluated to create the most pristine presentation while remaining true to the original look and feel of the films. As a bonus—and thus further stressing Coppola’s preference for the new Coda version of The Godfather: Part III—the original and 1991 cuts of the third film are included on a separate 4K disc, and to Coppola’s credit, he commissioned restorations of these versions as well. A handful of new extras have been prepared for this release, including some behind-the-scenes footage of the first Godfather and remembrances by set photographer Steve Shapiro, but most exciting are the extended looks at the arduous restoration process. Everyone involved takes justifiable pride in the careful work that was done for this release; particularly revealing are comparisons of the new transfers to the 2007 restorations, themselves lauded at the time but now wholly obsolete. A slew of previously released extras are also included, ranging from deleted scenes from all three films to retrospective documentaries on the first Godfather’s complex and fraught production to the impact of the trilogy. Overall Capturing the Corleones: Through the Lens of Photographer Steve Schapiro— In this reflective and frank discussion, special photographer Steve Schapiro shares his unique perspective and cherished memories as a witness to the making of this seminal film. Commentary on curated archival images makes for a fascinating, never-before-seen addition to the production's history. Godfather World (11 minutes): This is a look at the ways the movies have infiltrated American culture, with comments from Chase, actor Joe Mantegna, Alex Baldwin, and others.

Legacy Extras: Screen-specific audio commentaries by Francis Ford Coppola (from the 2001 DVD release)but the largest difference is the absence of the original cut of 'The Godfather, Part III' (the UHD disc included two cuts, actually). That film in either of The most satisfying science fiction TV shows of recent years have been those which place themselves in a near-future/alternative present, shows which place future tech in juxtaposition with retro style. We felt privileged to restore these films and a little in awe every day we worked on them," said Andrea Kalas, senior vice president, Paramount Archives. "We were able to witness first-hand how the brilliant cinematography, score, production design, costume design, editing, performances, and, of course, screenwriting and direction became famously more than the sum of their parts. It was our commitment to honor all of the filmmakers' exceptional work." I am very proud of The Godfather, which certainly defined the first third of my creative life," said Francis Ford Coppola. "With this 50th anniversary tribute, I'm especially proud Mario Puzo's THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is included, as it captures Mario and my original vision in definitively concluding our epic trilogy. It's also gratifying to celebrate this milestone with Paramount alongside the wonderful fans who've loved it for decades, younger generations who still find it relevant today, and those who will discover it for the first time." A Look Inside (73.5 minutes): This is a nice meaty making-of from 1990 that focuses mostly on the first two movies, with the third film viewed through rose-colored glasses since its release was imminent at the time. There’s plenty of behind-the-scenes footage to be found here, including some interesting Godfather screen tests, such as Robert DeNiro trying out for the role of Sonny.

If you’re a fan of this film, though, you will appreciate the care and attention Paramount put into restoring it for this 4K release. It looks wonderful, so at least it has that going for it. Emulsional Rescue: Revealing the Godfather (19 minutes): This is the original featurette that was created to discuss what was at the time a cutting-edge restoration of the movies. Full Circle: Preserving The Godfather (1080p, 16:21): A fascinating discovery piece exploring the process of building a new Nearly sixteen years after the flawless sequel comes the most flawed film of the franchise The Godfather: Part III. Or, as Coppola wants to call it now - The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. This film was in development for ages with a variety of players attached at various moments in its genesis. Similar to another underwhelming trilogy capper - Alien 3 - there were a lot of different ideas on how to keep the series going and few of them were worth the effort. When this film finally came together it was rushed through production being written, filmed, and edited inside of a year to meet a mandated studio release date. On top of that, the best idea for the sequel wasn’t the one that made it to the screen.Commentary on Colonialism, on how Capitalism supports and fosters oppressive regimes, excessive police force, the erosion of personal freedoms post 9/11, extraordinary rendition, terrorist detention, prison systems… it’s all in there, and you can take it or leave it, which makes the weaving of these themes so wondrously impressive. Restoration Comparisons—Before and after highlights showcase extensive picture quality improvements to The Godfather. Coppola recorded a new three-minute introduction to the movie that’s optional when you start the film. Clips from the movie and behind-the-scenes pictures accompany his reminiscence. On March 21st (my birthday, in case anyone is feeling generous…) The Godfather Trilogy is coming to 4K, complete with remastered and restored versions of all 3 films, as well as 3 different cuts of The Godfather Part III.

Disc four in this set is a "bonus disc" which is identical to that found in the UHD set and includes a blend of both new and preexisting supplements. Once the film's proper start gets things underway, things only improve; V’ger’s entrance, the Klingon score, both are just as impressive. The electric destruction of the Klingon vessels runs over the room! Effects are wonderfully realised, the chaos on the Enterprise bridge when Kirk first enters, the overhead and surround channels being used to maximise the confusion. Red Alert sirens are heard over head, computer terminals, the general chirping of the Enterprise, all make full use of the surround field. Epsilon-9 reply conversations come from everywhere! Paramount's SteelBook release of The Godfather is glossy and will show handling fingerprints. On the front is a beautifully rendered portrait of When we left The Godfather: Part II, Michael was dealing with the fallout of his betrayals and strengthening his grip on the family organization, the death of his brother, his shattered marriage, and the tragic isolation that brought him. The Corleone family was in shambles. Not only that, but Duvall’s Tom Hagan had deftly segued from being the brilliant legal and strategic mind of the family’s criminal dealings to becoming a potential rival for the head of the family. And that’s the story Coppola and Puzo apparently actually wanted to tell - the war between two brothers. But with budget and time restrictions, Duvall skipped and was unceremoniously written out and replaced by the eternally tan George Hamilton, who was good, but the role of B.J. Harrison could have been played by anyone. Regarded as one of the best American films ever by the American Film Institute, Francis Ford Coppola’s epic masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his Oscar®-winning* role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. The Godfather™ is a violent and chilling portrait of the Sicilian family’s struggle to stay in power in a post-war America of corruption, deceit and betrayal.

Best Streaming Movie (Original) - PREY

In what is undeniably one of the best sequels ever made, Francis Ford Coppola continues his epic Godfather trilogy with this saga of two generations of power within the Corleone family. Coppola, working once again with the author Mario Puzo, crafts two interwoven stories that work as both prequel and sequel to the original. That successor could be fiery Vincent (Andy Garcia)... but he may also be the spark that turns Michael's hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence. The film's meticulously restored picture and sound, under the supervision of American Zoetrope and Paramount Pictures, includes a new beginning and ending, as well as changes to scenes, shots, and music cues. Coppola begins his legendary trilogy, masterfully balancing the story of the Corleone’s family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo’s best-selling novel and featuring career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, this searing and brilliant film garnered ten Academy Award® nominations, and won three including Best Picture of 1972. Yes, it only supplies Apple content, but just this last year, that includes the likes of Will Smith's Emancipation, Will Ferrell's Spirited, Cha Cha Real Smooth, and The Tragedy of Macbeth, and shows - as well as the ones already listed above - such as Bad Sisters, Echo 3, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, and The Afterparty. Coppola & Puzo on Screenwriting (8 minutes): The pair talk about their collaboration on all three films.
