The game ends either when all 15 lines of the song are completed, or with the momentous arrival of Thorin. The player with the most points – who did the best job arousing Bilbo’s curiosity and shaking up his sheltered life – will win!

Each of the 13 dwarves has unique abilities, making the board game an asymmetrical experience. An Unexpected Party is described by Weta as being a family board game that plays in 40 to 60 minutes. This expansion contains 165 new cards, including five heroes: Bilbo Baggins, Beorn, Nori, Ori, and Thorin Oakenshield. Gandalf and the company of Dwarves will be at your side as allies. Together, your band of heroes will have to deal with Trolls, Wolves and Goblins as they journey toward Erebor – and of course, Bilbo will have a puzzling encounter with one of the riverfolk who has been corrupted by darkness. The saga is concluded in The Hobbit: On the Doorstep expansion.The player with the next-lowest numbered Dwarf card then becomes the new active player. Repeat steps "3-4" until all players have acted. He then advances Bilbo one space on the game board, reaping the gains, or suffering the losses the space indicates, namely: additional provisions, character development or character damage (the latter are indicated by an X over the icon).

The Hobbit: Over Hill & Under Hill is the first Saga expansion for the LotR LCG. Saga expansions allows you to play scenarios adapted directly from the narrative told by Tolkien. In Over Hill & Under Hill you will find three scenarios based on the first half of The Hobbit. These scenarios can be played individually, or linked together, to form a campaign. Here the game can become very interesting especially in the last few circles, countless times my friends have helped me as I helped them in winning their gold out of fear that Smaug will reach his destination and yet I should hope they fail in getting their gold. Players will keep going through these phases until they finish the last adventure card or Smaug reaches Laketown, if they are all successful they will count their gold and find the winner but if they fail to stop Smaug then no matter how much gold you have you will all lose. At the end of the game, each player awards himself the indicated number of jewels that corresponds to the position of his lowest scoring marker.Through Event cards, Bilbo advances on his journey. Moving forward, each of the spaces on the board also represents a chance for players to enhance their characters. Event cards can also provide players with gifts and opportunities!

An Unexpected Party is a fast, fun, action-based tabletop game for 2-4 players, set in the opening scenes of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey– when the thirteen Dwarves arrive unannounced at Bag End, much to Bilbo’s dismay! Mischief ensues as the dwarves cheerfully jest with Bilbo under the watchful eye of Gandalf.This expansion contains 165 new cards, including five new hero cards: Balin, Bard the Bowman, Bilbo Baggins, Bombur, and Oin. As Bilbo and company draw close to Erebor they will encounter Elves, Goblins and the Men of Laketown. They cannot rest easy, even when reaching their destination, for the mighty Smaug has made the mountain his home. Outside, other threats grow. The coming of the Dwarfs has awoken the curioisty and greed of Man, Goblin and Elf. This delightfully small and simple game will take you and your friends through an adventure with multiple levels of difficulty, the ability to level up yourself and the fight to claim as much treasure as you can. During the same phase, known as the journey phase, players can also win special cards that feel like monopolies get out of jail free cards, during the second phase of the game these cards will allow players to perform extraordinary feats to win the precious gold. If there is a tie, all tied green scoring markers advance one space. This process is then repeated by comparing all purple scoring markers, then all red scoring markers. Note: The markers on the Character board cannot increase beyond the top space and they cannot fall below the bottom space. Note: some Event cards have different effects depending on the number of players: The same card might either be resolved like a Travel- ling card, or like a Gift card, as instructed.

When a card says "All lowest positions advance", all players first compare the position of their green scoring markers on their Character boards, and the player with the green scoring marker in the lowest position advances his green scoring marker one space. Unfold the board and place it on the table. Place the Bilbo figure on the "Bag End" space and the Smaug figure on the "Kill Smaug theDragon" space. As I draw cards to see if Biblo will progress or we shall gain special rewards I am constantly on the edge, hoping for rewards and if not rewards trying to stay ahead on how I will land exactly where I need to give myself the best chance in the adventure phase.The rules for the Hobbit Boardgame will tell you that you can set the level up system in a few different ways to make the game more easily or challenging and I have found this to be very true as the number of chances to improve your level will change only subtly and the starting values will be able to have a big impact on the entire game. Adventure Phase After each player has secretly chosen his Dwarf card, the players all reveal their chosen card simultaneously. If a player possesses the Ring, he can, after this roll, turn any one of his dice onto any side he chooses. This ability remains with the player who has the Ring for as long as he possesses it. The gameplay has been co-designed by Ian Luxmoore and Jarratt Gray, the co-creator of board game Endeavor: Age of Sail, while Weta senior concept artist Daniel Falconer - who worked on the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies - handled illustration. When a player advances Bilbo onto a space that depicts the Ring, the player places the Ring token in front of him and must decrease the purple Cunning marker on his Character board by one space.
