The hallucination of Eve is trying to deceive character Paul and really acts like the serpent and the Father of Lies, tearing him down and trying to get him to see how terrible he is.

Seeing the cover and releasing it to the world is exciting, although a little strange. It’s a small step towards revealing something that I’ve kept to myself for a long time. Yes, the story took a while to write, but the core idea has been with me for a lot longer. It stems from my life growing up in rural Wales. For much of that time, I lived in a Methodist Chapel house. My father was a lay preacher, and faith was all around in our household. Rather than be indoctrinated, I somehow ended up on another path, realizing from an early age that I was an atheist. It had a touch of Lovecraft, as well as the lovable ol' good versus evil trope that never gets old. My complaints were minimal; nothing was overly detrimental to my enjoyment. In an event that causes all the people of the world to lose consciousness for but a moment, faith is gone - everyone is an atheist, and anyone who had strong faith before is left bereft. The event's cause is unknown, but some believe it's the doing of a powerful External Force, and are willing to commit acts of violence in its name against those who still bear symbols of religion... And, no, faith is never restored. It’s just everyone accepting that this is the world now. Even by the end of the book that’s all there is. There’s nothing after death. God was really a lie and the only meaning in the world is how they commune together and support each other. We thank you for your interest in our ministries. We are so glad that you are here. You are among many readers who come from various walks of life. The setting for the story is perfect. Small country towns can be scary (I know, I live in a small country town). Add in crazy townees, monsters and cosmic shenanigans and you have the basis for a great story. Matt does a wonderful job of making it feel like the town is closing in around you as you read, the climatic scenes in the town especially. The Otherworld, another dimension used in the story is creepy and at times beautiful. Now, I'm not sure if I am just burnt out on "modern horror" but, The Faithful, unfortunately, will not be making that list for me.

I can’t really think of why you should read this book. Unless it leads you on a path of truth seeking and you read some apologetics book afterwards. In hindsight, I'm not sure if I'm burnt out or what, because that sounds like as rad of a synopsis as any. Plus everyone lives by faith. If faith disappeared did that mean that people lost faith in each other? That people didn’t have faith that people would follow the rules of the road? They lost faith that their bed wouldn’t collapse when they laid down? Or was ‘religious’ faith siphoned off from the rest? And is that possible? By late antiquity, some gnostic and Neoplatonist philosophers had expanded the syncretic equation to include Aion, Adonis, and other gods of the mystery religions. Scholars also note links between the life-giving wine of the Dionysian cult and the centrality of wine in the Christian Eucharist, as well as parallels between the Greek god and Christ himself. The sixth-century B.C. classical cult known as Orphism centered on the belief that Dionysus was torn to pieces and then resurrected. Twentieth-century thinkers such as James Frazer saw Dionysus and Christ in the context of an eastern Mediterranean tradition of dying-and-rising gods, whose sacrifice and resurrection redeemed their people.
