A doctor with access to a dangerous radioactive substance is found murdered on the overlook above the Mulholland Dam. Retracing his steps, Harry learns that a large quantity of radioactive cesium was stolen shortly before the doctor’s death. With the cesium in unknown hands, Harry fears the murder could be part of a terrorist plot to poison a major American city. After graduating in 1980, Connelly worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, primarily specializing in the crime beat. In Fort Lauderdale he wrote about police and crime during the height of the murder and violence wave that rolled over South Florida during the so-called cocaine wars. In 1986, he and two other reporters spent several months interviewing survivors of a major airline crash. They wrote a magazine story on the crash and the survivors which was later short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. The magazine story also moved Connelly into the upper levels of journalism, landing him a job as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, one of the largest papers in the country, and bringing him to the city of which his literary hero, Chandler, had written.

In a 12-hour adventure first serialized in weekly installments in the New York Times Magazine, Harry Bosch finally catches a fresh case after years of resurrecting old ones ( Echo Park, 2006, etc.), and it’s a honey. Question: The Overlook was originally serialized in the New York Times Sunday Magazine. For the publication of the novel you were able to re-write the story without the magazine’s space constraints. How was the experience of revisiting the story? The Overlook now races to its conclusion as Bosch and Walling strive to capture Maxwell. However, the renegade agent shoots the one person who could implicate him, his lover Alicia, and then, as Bosch and Walling move in, himself. Another outing for Harry Bosch, shorter than most (even shorter than I expected, as the Kindle version ended at about 88%, the rest of it filled with the first half dozen chapters of Two Kinds Of Truth, which I personally find irritating, but oh well).

Throughout we learn that Harry Bosch likes jazz, especially sax, and one of his favorites is Frank Morgan (whom I have also heard live 2-3 times); I am not sure how this went down, but not Frank Morgan is playing sax through this audio version. Cool, though Morgan's vibe is a little mellow for this thriller. Here's "The Nearness of You:" This photo shows where Bosch’s small TV house sits on the side of a hill with it’s grand “Overlook” of LA city - I was surprised how it looks - they did a good job find it.... Connelly’s books are always compellingly suspenseful, but this one runs in overdrive, with little time for Bosch’s usual reflections on the past. …the energy and skill Connelly continues to bring to this series will leave readers eager for Bosch’s next case.” I listened to it, and Canadian actor Len Carriou is just a wonderful reader, perfect for Connelly's stories. Ignacio "Iggy" Ferras, Bosch's young partner. Iggy wants to play by the book and is seriously disturbed by Bosch's let's-break-the-rules attitude. At one point, he tells Bosch that he cannot work with him and will be requesting a new partner. At the beginning of The Overlook, we discover that Detective Harry Bosch is now in Homicide Special, a part of the prestigious Robbery Homicide Division within the LAPD. Harry had been working open-unsolved cases in the last two books, The Closers and Echo Park. Given his motto, that everybody counts or nobody counts, does it really matter what division Harry is in? They determine his wife (Alicia) was “hog-tied”, released & then re-tied after the murder trying to hide the crime. That leads to his wife & her FBI lover, their romance wanted the money, but then they turn on each other. Who needs to be arrested, before the other commits murder/suicide fights begin? I first read this story when it was serialized in the New York Times Magazine. Following that, Connelly expanded the story and published it as a novel. I remember enjoying the serialized version, but, as one would expect, the novel winds up being a fuller and richer experience. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival.
