About this deal

A patient dies during surgery but she know him from her past and thinks she deliberately botched the surgery because she wanted him dead...A prosecutor Paula seemed to be keen on making her life hell who is ready to go to any lengths to hurt Anne.. In this surprising but refreshing new approach by Wolfe, I was both happy and disappointed. There are a few “What the?” plot twists that I felt were from remarkably unlikely to downright implausible or unbelievable. The main protagonist of Dr. Anne Rider was far less lovable and downright grating on my nerves well before the 75% mark. I cannot elaborate without potentially leaking a spoiler. I can say that the primary protagonist of Anne presented as too perfect and righteous 99% of the time, and I can also disclose that one of these two ladies (?) are unreliable narrators with egregious lies of omission. A copy of this book was kindly provided to me by Netgalley and Bookouture in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! *** THE SURGEON is a fast-paced medical thriller that can easily be read in a day. Early on, there was a big twist and my jaw dropped. I was not expecting it, but maybe I should have. There is one character in the book that I couldn't stand, named Paula. I am sure you won't like her either! Without giving more of the plot away, I encourage you to grab a copy of THE SURGEON. Leslie Wolfe did her research, medically speaking. I did learn a few things along the way that I didn't know about cardiothoracic surgery and I found it interesting. I would say to go into this book mainly blind and you will enjoy it even more. I can't wait until Leslie Wolfe's next book.

I did, however, thoroughly enjoy all the medical details as always so I tried to ignore the domestic drama and focused mostly on that. The first patient she’s ever lost in her career, her coworkers seem to understand her distress. After all, even though she’s had some hard-fought near losses, Anne has never had to call time of death in an OR—until now. One thing she knows, though, is that she doesn’t regret what she just did, but what will she do if someone uncovers her actions themselves? For there’s one thing that’s certain. The perfect life she has led until just a moment ago is now primed for demolition, requiring only one little match for the whole thing to blow up in her face.

However, Paula has a hidden agenda. She is obsessed. She wants to bring Anne down. She is using her office and position to push this investigation into the death and Anne. I love Wolfe’s plot twists. She’s a master of them… I always give 5 stars to an author who can trip me up… Wolfe gets all the stars for getting me MORE THAN ONCE!… I could go on and on and on about what I loved about this.” Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn: Explore the twisted relationship between a husband and wife as secrets and lies unravel in this psychological thriller. With its surprising twists and turns, this book is guaranteed to keep you hooked. Such a gripping thriller that kept me awake all night, trying to finish the book!… This book was completely mind-blowing and I was literally hooked from the first chapter till the end, wanting to know what is going to happen next!” Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Also, why do all the characters have to be so unlikeable?! Paula is particularly despicable and I absolutely hated every single minute I had to spend with her. She is a self-centered, vindictive, scheming and simply horrible piece of trash, and a corrupt one at that for trying to use the justice system for her own devious plans. The husband and lover I have not one good word for; and especially since the story kind of makes him come over as a good guy? Or at least in a rather bland kind of way, without too much development. And the surgeon Anne... Boy, did she get on my nerves! Not only did I feel that she never really 'killed' her patient in the first place, but her constant worry and guilt became so frustrating I wanted to throw my kindle against the wall. The constant repetition of her worries and fear that the police was coming for her was just overkill... I also found her particularly clueless in general about what was going on in her life, and I wondered how she could be so blind about her husband.

The Surgeon,” Wolfe’s recent release and the fourth addition to her Standalone Books, suggests to me that she is experimenting with genre boundaries with this novel’s remarkable twisty twists and unreliable narrator writing technique. That is hardly new to the scene since many of today’s household names broke new ground when they adopted versions of some degree of deviation from the old genre boundaries of the “psychological thriller” to forge their own stylized calling cards. The narration of the book could be part of my issue. It’s hard for me to parse out whether Anne was written to be perceived as weak or if the performance of the book overly highlighted that trait. Whether Paula was genuinely so dislikable or if the narrator did such a good job making her so that it pushed her over the edge. Having had some medical training I was really looking forward to listening to this book. Unfortunately, I knew after the first chapter it was a lightweight, run of the mill ramble about a husband cheating on his wife and a "mystery" that is supposed to be exciting ensues. Supposedly she is a heart surgeon who can't figure out why her husband would always come home from work late smelling like fresh deodorant and old spice cologne! Seriously?? Medically so off and unrealistic. The reader who depicts the surgeon makes her come across as a shy, sit in the corner, whining, emotional and immature woman. Not even close to the personality of a heart surgeon! One of the strengths of “The Surgeon” lies in its well-crafted characters. Detective Gabriel McRay is a complex and flawed protagonist, haunted by his own demons while relentlessly pursuing the killer. Leslie Wolf’s attention to detail in character development brings the supporting cast to life, each with their own motivations and secrets. As readers, we become emotionally invested in their journeys, adding depth and authenticity to the overall narrative. How do all these storylines connect, and how does the man on the table fit into these lives? I did not see this one coming. Readers will be pleasantly surprised.Like a renowned surgeon, Wolfe has a tight grasp on her skills, making her an auto-read author. Her skills are well-honed and so perfectly utilized that readers won’t see the twists coming nor have time to ‘hate’ a character simply because they don’t like the personality or actions! An author who has the ability to create an unlikeable character and have me cheer them on, is most certainly gifted. You need to read this one to experience a master craftsperson at work. This is a novel I’ve already been telling everyone about - heaven help the next person who asks if I’ve read any good books lately! I could go on and on and on about what I loved about this book. Such a gripping thriller that kept me awake all night, trying to finish the book! … This book was completely mind-blowing and I was literally hooked from the first chapter till the end , wanting to know what is going to happen next!” Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Dr. Anne Wiley is a cardiothoracic surgeon who lost a patient, Caleb Donaghy, on the operating table. No patient has died in her operating table. She is married to a lawyer who is set out to become mayor. But someone is out to get her.
