About this deal

There’s a point in life - perhaps it arrives at different times for different people, but certainly most of us must experience it by middle-age - when time seems to speed up: another summer gone by again, and surely it’s not Christmas already? And perhaps as the experiences and memories pile up, the past seems always to be with us - and it becomes increasingly difficult to just live in the present moment. Rewards can be a great source of motivation for adopting good time management habits. For each important task you accomplish, you can give yourself a little treat. It doesn't need to be extravagant or expensive. Here are some simple ways to motivate yourself: She now makes dolls of a quite specific nature. They seem to be made according to some baby’s birthweight, and the clients are sent by a counsellor of some sort. Mona simply chats to them a bit, draws them out, and finally asks for a weight. We have to figure this part out ourselves. It was only the kindness of a stranger that gave me the time to say goodbye. And that kindness gave me forty-five minutes with my child and I turned that forty-five minutes into a lifetime, into all the days and hours and weeks and years that we would never have together.’

Try the Pomodoro method. This technique was developed in the late 1980s by Francesco Cirillo, a university student who was overwhelmed by studying and assignments. The Pomodoro method requires using a timer to break down your work into 25-minute intervals, separated by 5 minutes of break time. After four pomodoros, you may take a longer 15-30 minute break. Pomodoro (“tomato” in Italian) promotes concentration and relieves mental fatigue, which is especially useful for open-ended work like conducting research, studying for an exam, or finishing a consulting project.

This book is just a wonderful, gentle, and moving novel that honestly just took my break away. I loved how hooked i got into Mona’s story, as tragic as it was, and how much I yearned to just gather her, both the young and old versions of her, in my arms to help her and console her.

The same research suggested 4 repetitions; around 20 mins, 50 mins, 9 hours and 5 days after memorizing something. [3] One of the main themes in the book is ageing and the passing of time. How pressing are those issues for you? Disclaimer: I have a friend who makes dolls which look like real children – I mean eerily like real children, and people clamour to get them and take them home. People will push them around in prams, the smaller dolls. They are gorgeous, and a little scary. But I digress.] You don’t need to do this for long. In fact, about 15-20 minutes of listening to yourself should be more than enough. By typing what you want to memorize in that note, you can then read it again every time you use your phone.

Retailers:

For Mona, it's the joy of playing on a Wexford beach as a young girl, next to her family's cottage overlooking the Irish sea. The thrill of moving to Birmingham with a new job and a room of her own in a busy boarding-house. Meeting the love of her life; a whirlwind marriage; a sudden, tragic loss. But research shows that it’s useless to adopt that strategy. The goal isn’t to avoid forgetting that memory; it’s to forget it so you can relearn and solidify its roots in your brain. Quadrant 1: Important and urgent. Do these tasks first. These are the priorities that are most relevant to your goals. The early novels of Kate Atkinson come to mind with de Waal's work, as do authors such as Deirdre Purcell and Maggie O'Farrell with the focus on immigrant and working class communities.

Since publishing My Name Is Leon, you’ve become a vocal campaigner for more inclusivity in publishing. What drove you to speak out about this? Although recent research on effective learning techniques ranked mnemonics as a low utility learning method, the only reason for that was that mnemonics don’t have a wide variety of applications in general learning. [6] Also, it’s important to get a good amount of sleep in for improving memory in general. 13. Challenge Yourself

As an adult, Mona still loves the beach and the sea, although the kind of weather there doesn’t appeal to me. When you find these tasks, ask yourself if this work needs to be done at all. If it’s no longer important to your team, consider putting the work on hold. If the task still needs to be done, ask yourself if you’re the best person for the job—and if not, go through the same delegation exercise to figure out who is. 6. Ditch handwritten to-dos—use a tool

The story is told through Mona in concurrent past and present narratives. In the present day, Mona is turning 60 and living in a seaside town in England. Childless and living alone, she runs a specialised doll-making business, the premise of which is both intriguing and heartrendingly sweet. Without giving too much away, this business helps people who are suffering from loss and eventually hints at the compelling truth of Mona's sad tale. As soon as I read about Mona's endeavors and the manner in which she creates these dolls, I was mesmerised by this book. Lovers of de Waal's debut novel may say Leon is a difficult book to follow but, for me, the impact of this sophomore effort is even greater. Your new novel is about a young couple of Irish immigrants in Birmingham, Mona and Will, and a tragedy that tears them apart. What came to you first: the characters or their heartbreaking situation?Although Mona has friends she is quite solitary and when she begins a relationship with a neighbour, Karl life looks up. But Mona spends much of her time thinking about her first love, her husband, William. They both left Ireland for a new life in Birmingham but things go badly wrong on the night of the IRA bombings. The ending of her story is as unexpected as it is uplifting and I loved the portrayal of a strong female character who is able to overcome obstacles against all the odds. It’s nearly impossible to focus on what truly matters or know if you’re prioritizing the right work at the right time. Your intentions for the day fly out the window in the face of high-priority tasks, seemingly urgent messages, and never-ending notifications. To keep up with the pace of work, 80% of knowledge workers report working with their inbox or other communication apps open. As a result, workers are less efficient, with messages, actions and deadlines more likely to be missed. Mind you, it was a bit confronting to be watching her amazing acting in “Killing Eve” at night and listening to her on Audible being people in such a remarkably different story. That’s a fine actor for you. When you forget something, it’s not like you’re actively trying to. It just… happens and that makes it hard to inhibit your forgetfulness.
