The original U87 was built so long as it housed a battery compartment to compensate for situations where 48v phantom power wasn’t available. This version doesn’t however have a battery compartment as every mixer (and their dog) can supply phantom power these days. You should get an instant answer on whether your application has been successful, though in some rare cases Klarna or V12 may need to look at the application in more detail. I have one of the early units from the 90s it sounds great even when compared to much more expensive mics. Trusted Shops The first step toward a more affordable U87 was to ditch the transformer. Neumann’s prefix ‘TLM’ stands for ‘Transformer-Less Microphone’. Transformers add their own sonic color, sometimes limit the transient response of a mic, and tend to be expensive.

I have been working with this mic for a couple of years now, and it sounds awesome once you get used to it.If I Could Keep Just One Microphone Which One Would I Keep? Neumann TLM 103" Production Expert (read the full review here) Features

It delivers uncompromised professional sound for home studio projects with a nice preamp and excellent digital audio converters. Neumann TLM 103 demands highly acute care, which means that one needs to be concerned with the environment recording. The TLM 102 isn't much better in terms of features; it's got none. Again, it's just got that fixed Cardioid pattern which does a good job of rejecting sounds from the sides and rear. For vocals this mic is exceptional; clean and detailed with plenty of headroom at 138dB max SPL and a dynamic range of 87 dB. The bass frequency response of this mic is focused and clear with no muddiness while the treble end sings brightly without a “ceiling”. This mic can also capture nuances of performances that would be lost on plenty of lesser mics (sensitivity at 1 kHz into 1 kohm - 23 mV/Pa). It is these subtleties that separate recording a person singing & an individual's voice, in my opinion. Ensure that you have a quiet recording ambiance to get the most value from this microphone, as it’s prone to catch the ambient sounds even in a noisy place. The TLM 103 has some magic too. In general, it's a richer mic, so it's perfect for lead vocals and acoustic guitars. Its high SPL tolerance also makes it ideal for recording guitar cabinets since you can really crank those amps and hit them hard. Plus, it's probably great for anything percussive because it has a good crisp transient response.
