To carry the burden that Kaneki carried before he turned into a ghoul was already taxing. He was an orphan with a relative who didn't care about him. But once Kaneki decided to shoulder the burden of essentially the entire 20th ward, he turned into a tragedy-just-waiting-to-happen. Eto Yoshimura (aka Ten Takatsuki) being the ONE-EYED OWL. I mean WTF?! Where did this come from?! I know in the previous volume it was mentioned that the one-eyed owl might be related to Mr. Yoshimura buuuut...did we ever find out that he had a daughter? And why her? I mean...it could have been ANYBODY. I just wasn't expecting that...

Finally, I feel like Sui Ishida didn't put any effort into building or concluding the storyline. None of my questions were ever answered - instead, the ending left me with even more unanswered questions than ever before. This is a review of the entire 14 volumes of Tokyo Ghoul (NOT including Tokyo Ghoul:re), so I'll be reviewing the series as a whole and not each volume individually. In this volume we learn more about Touka and Ayato's childhood, and how they were once really close. It's very sad to see how estranged they have become and the different pathways they have taken. Ayato is hell-bent on causing havoc and feasting on the human race but Touka prefers to integrate with humankind and even has human friends! She wants to go to college and better herself but Ayato is on a destructive downward spiral. Kaneki and Ayato fight with Kaneki breaking exactly half of Ayato's bones (which he did deserve tbh). So as a manga reader for over 20 years, and anime watcher, you hear a lot of "the manga is so much better" as much as people go "the book is so much better than the movie". So with Tokyo Ghoul I took it with a grain of salt. Now there are times the Manga is better than the anime but it's almost always over exaggerated. However, Tokyo Ghoul would be the major exception.Elsewhere, Shuu, Banjo and Uta take on Noro and discover that he can heal himself once his head has been removed!! Volume 1 | Volume 2 | Volume 3 | Volume 4 | Volume 5 | Volume 6 | Volume 7 | Volume 8 | Volume 9 | Volume 10 | Volume 11 | Volume 12 | Volume 13 | Volume 14 The art is really stellar and is a must to really get the effect of the dragon on the city. I am totally confused about who many of the characters are working on what to do. They weren’t familiar to me. However we get a big battle over the dragon between Ken’s new wife and the “boy” who wanted to be with Ken. That really made up for the character confusion earlier.

Under Torso's mercy, Mutsuki remembers the darkest secrets of his past that he was repressing so far and kills his captor, before disappearing. Meanwhile, Eto breaks free but is mortally wounded by First-Class Investigator Nimura Furuta, who reveals that he underwent the same procedure as Kaneki. While fighting Arima, Kaneki renews his conviction to keep fighting and living for his loved ones and defeats him. Arima then commits suicide, but before passing away, he reveals to Kaneki that the Washū Clan, that controls the CCG, is composed of Ghouls. Before she presumably dies as well, Eto learns of Arima's defeat and concludes that both had succeeded with their plan to raise Kaneki to become the "One-Eyed King", with the power to change the world.

Kaneki is more of a savage now that he beat the shit out of Jason and accepted his ghoul-ness. Reading the fight with him and Touka's brother was... Quite an experience. Review for the whole series: Oof, I have some thoughts about this one. I think the best way to sum up this series is that I feel like it is a concept that has a lot of potential, but it ultimately fell short for me in several ways. Instead of a really long review, I think I'll just write up a pros and cons list to help other people decide if it might be something they would like to try.

Sometimes good people make bad choices. It doesn't mean they are bad people. It means they're human

To say that the characters had a character development would be an understatement. If you look at the stories of Hinami, Amon, Juzou/Suzuya, Touka, Tsukiyama, or even Hide, you will have some character development to analyse. But when I say that Kaneki had character development I mean that he had a whole metamorphosis. And what was all that about the clowns right at the end?! I thought Uta and Itori were on Kaneki's side but it seems to me that they want him to suffer even more than he already has done!!! Ken's descent into Ghoul-hood was both fascinating and horrifying to watch. There's just something about a character fighting against their nature and pursuing the "right" path above all else that fascinates me. The portrayal of the canonically LBGTQIA+ characters is not great. The two characters that I can think of off the top of my head are portrayed as very predatory. It's not great when your only LGBTQIA+ characters are all bad guys.
