Toshiba has pinpointed its picture performance as an area of growth, developing the TRU Picture Engine. It breaks down the TV’s picture performance into three parts: micro dimming, motion control and upscaling. For instance, as well as handling the industry standard HDR10 system, the 55UL7A63DB can also play the broadcast-friendly HLG system (as used by the BBC iPlayer app for both live and catch-up HDR streams) and Dolby Vision. This provides extra scene-by-scene picture information to help TVs deliver better HDR pictures.

The former enables the TV to take advantage of extra scene-by-scene data delivered by Dolby Vision sources, while the latter sees the TV taking on the challenge of creating a soundstage capable of delivering at least a sense of Dolby Atmos’s object-based approach to sound. During the heart-wrenching scene where Armstrong has to explain the details and dangers of his upcoming Apollo 11 mission to his family, we get some credible details on their faces. There’s still smearing, but with less detail on show, it’s not quite as noticeable. The biggest issue is that this panel just can’t handle movement. It offers good 4K detail when the picture is still, but even small actions such as characters moving their heads causes blurring. It’s incredibly off-putting and the motion processing technology does little to improve it. This issue can lead to some colours in dark scenes looking a little ‘polluted’ by greyness too – though at least neither the greyness nor any over-aggressive work by the Tru Micro Dimming system results in any significant loss of shadow detail. Bass is present, to be fair, but it sounds rather dislocated from the rest of the sound. Similarly, the set can go quite loud without causing cabinet rattle or speaker phutting, but the compressed nature of the sound means that it isn’t a particularly pleasant loud experience. It works well, but it isn’t without some niggles. The far-field microphone on the device recognised prompts to increase or decrease the volume, but wouldn’t respond to muting the audio. Asking Alexa to change the channel created an awkward period of silence, and trying to open Netflix led to her to telling me facts about Netflix. Perhaps I just didn’t make myself clear, but there do appear to be limitations to how much you can ask of the digital assistant.

While smart features are starting to appear on almost all TVs these days, the Toshiba 55UL7A63DB carries a better selection than you’d expect for its price. In fact, there are dozens of apps presented through a surprisingly sleek and economical GUI. The remote has IR learning for control over other devices. To disable this, hold down the “O” button for a few seconds. Controlling other devices isn’t the smoothest; pressing Home on the Sony UBP-X700 kept bringing up a side menu instead of returning to the UBP-X700’s start menu. Pressing Home when in-app also brings up picture settings instead of the Home tile section on the bottom of the screen. Toshiba 55UL5A63DB features– Dolby Vision HDR and Alexa are welcome featuresThe Toshiba 55UA3A63DB television has a large display diagonal of 55 inches, equivalent to 139 centimeters in metric measurements. It has an annual energy consumption of 103 kilowatt-hours and a typical power consumption of 71 watts, with a standby power consumption of only 0.5 watts. Without the stand, it measures 1129 millimeters in width, 81 millimeters in depth, and 655 millimeters in height. With the stand, its dimensions are the same for width but slightly larger in depth at 249 millimeters and height at 691 millimeters. It weighs 13000 grams without the stand. While the 50UK3163DB isn’t anything special when it comes to handling dark images, it sure stands out with the intensity it brings to both bright parts of dark scenes, and full-screen bright HDR content. In fact, when it comes to the bright end of the light spectrum, it delivers arguably the most aggressive HDR performance in its class.
