Roland’s Aira branded gear has sometimes tended to skew a little too hard toward the EDM/big room end of the spectrum when it comes to preset sounds. Those bases are still covered, but they’re joined by a broad range of tones covering analogue beats, vinyl stabs, retro FX, melodic one-shots and much more. It’s not just the range of sounds that have been upgraded from the original TR-8, but also the depth of shaping. As with the TR-8S, each instrument can make use of a customisable Ctrl rotary, which can be used for live tweaking of a single parameter. On top of this, the TR-6S has a master effect module that can make use of 19 effect types, as well as separate delay and reverb send effects.

Kits-wise, you get 128 different ones (with a number of non-filled user locations) which can be altered on each pattern, so it’s easy to find a well-programmed pattern and completely change its attitude and genre just by loading in a new kit or sound per part. The Shuffle control also offers a surprising amount of variation for each pattern, too.a) The SOFTWARE may use open source software and other third party software (herein referred to as "OSS, etc.").

While many of these features, such as outputs and triggering, are self-explanatory and explained in the manual, the TR-8S effects, mute assignments, and LFO are worth a closer look. The TR-6S features the ability to set one of the eight Variations as a Fill Pattern which can be triggered manually or can be set to go off every 2, 4, 8, 16, or 32 measures. However, editing these Fill Patterns can be a bit confusing using the standard technique, and many users seem to think they aren’t editable at all.

LFO.This feature is among the most innovative tools I’ve encountered on a drum machine and may become a hallmark of the TR-8S sound. If you’re serious about making or customizing your own kits, it is essential to understand how it works. The free TR-EDITOR for macOS and Windows significantly enhances the workflow of the TR-8S and TR-6S, providing an easy-to-use graphical interface with expanded visual controls and organizational tools. The latest version includes a compact UI option that frees up screen space for using the editor along with other applications on small computer displays.
