One of the most famous of Thurber's humorous modern fables, it first appeared in The New Yorker on October 21, 1939; and was first collected in his book Fables for Our Time and Famous Poems Illustrated (Harper and Brothers, 1940). The fable has since been reprinted in The Thurber Carnival (Harper and Brothers, 1945), James Thurber: Writings and Drawings (The Library of America, 1996, ISBN 1-883011-22-1), The Oxford Book of Modern Fairy Tales, and other publications. Be careful not to fall into your own trap, because evil people are always punished for their deeds. The Unicorn Garden & Magical Wishing Well set contained everything shown on the box picture including a wishing well, props various animals, bunting, small stones, a fairy and seeds. The only thing I had to supply was the compost. So my daughter and I started to ‘build’ the fairy garden using the really simply step-by-step instruction booklet supplied. It featured each step with an illustration for guidance. It wasn’t hard to set up but it definitely wasn’t something you could leave a child to do on their own. I needed to help with many aspects of the set-up including compost supply and fitting the batteries in the wishing well, but as a team it was a lovely little activity for us.

The Unicorn Rests in a Garden" may have been created as a single image rather than part of a series. In this instance, the unicorn probably represents the beloved tamed. He is tethered to a tree and constrained by a fence, but the chain is not secure and the fence is low enough to leap over: The unicorn could escape if he wished. Clearly, however, his confinement is a happy one, to which the ripe, seed-laden pomegranates in the tree—a medieval symbol of fertility and marriage—testify. The red stains on his flank do not appear to be blood, as there are no visible wounds like those in the hunting series; rather, they represent juice dripping from bursting pomegranates above. Many of the other plants represented here, such as wild orchid, bistort, and thistle, echo this theme of marriage and procreation: they were acclaimed in the Middle Ages as fertility aids for both men and women. Even the little frog, nestled among the violets at the lower right, was cited by medieval writers for its noisy mating. View more Listen

It is a lovely activity to do together and has that “wholesome” feel to it and my girls loved playing their imaginary games once all was set up (and before)!

The protagonists of this story, th man and his wife, are obviously opposed to each other. The man is dreamy, seems kind and composed, while the woman is unfriendly and selfish towards him. So when the man went upstairs to tell his wife about the great news he had experienced, she opened an unfriendly eye..and looked up at him coldly and she’s even threatening to send him to the booby hatch. The strong desire to get rid of her husband is expressed by the simile As soon as the husband had gone out of the house, the wife got up and dressed as fast as she could followed by she was very excited and there was a gloat in her eye which again stresses the fact of her evil plan.
