About this deal

The tone of the new mic is extremely similar to that of the Videomic, offering a characteristically rich mid-range with an emphasis on vocal timbre. To my ear, the Videomic Pro sounds a little 'lighter' than its predecessor, less congested in the mid‑range and more open at the top. This could be down to updated preamp circuitry or the subtle change in capsule design, but either way it's a welcome development.

Plug-in power has long been a standard for camera manufacturers, and so the VideoMicro is compatible with the vast majority of cameras in the market. No battery required – the VideoMic GO also runs on plugin power from your camera or recording device. and -20dB gain pad to help ensure you don’t overload your camera’s preamp when recording loud sound sources. position gain control (-10dB, 0, +20dB) – which is particularly useful if you are using the mic to record live music or other loud sound sources.Compact form factor – 150mm long and just 85g, which is extremely light for such a feature-rich mic. The VideoMicro is extremely user-friendly as there's no switches or battery to worry about - just plug in and go. All microphones need power however, and in the case of the VideoMicro it is drawing a very small voltage commonly referred to as "plug-in power" from your camera (or recording device) via the audio cable.

The VideoMicro’s bigger brother, the VideoMic GO is another lightweight option for vloggers and run and gun filmmakers. It is also very affordable and is dead-simple to operate – designed to be ready to record whenever you need to go. Super-cardioid polar pattern – delivering more directional audio, focusing on sound from the frontwhile rejecting sound from the sides. High frequency boost – perfect for enhancing detail and clarity in your recordings, especially when using a deadcat windshieldHaving the ability to record with and without a camera opens up your options a ton. It uses AA batteries, has a Rycote Lyre suspension system, and is built to last. The self-noise level is extremely low as well. No battery required – rather, it runs on plugin power delivered directly from your camera or recording device ( you can read more about different types of power here). The controls are located on the rear of the mic and are very simple. The upper switch has three positions: off, on and high‑pass filter. The filter activates a roll‑off at 80Hz, dropping off from about 100Hz at a little more than 10dB per octave. It's useful for attenuating handling noise, wind noise and low frequencies boosted by the proximity effect (an increase in bass response near to a sound source, common to all directional mics).

With that out of the way, let's take a look at what makes each one unique and why you might choose one over another. VideoMicroPair of high-quality ½-inch condenser capsules arranged in an XY configuration – captures an accurate soundscape in any environment. Ultra lightweight, compact form factor – just 116g, which not a whole lot heavier than the VideoMic Pro and will sit just fine atop any DLSR camera.
