About this deal

The collaboration or the resistance, or the saving of these people, happened in ordinary places in little houses hidden away, in little villages hidden away.” There is something melodramatic and soapy about this glossy adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s second world war novel for children, the story of a French boy who helps to save Jewish children by smuggling them over the mountains into Spain. The problem, I think, comes from a fear of upsetting its target audience of older kids (the film has a 12A rating). So the tough bits are fuzzily done – at arm’s length and hurried over – making for an oddly flat unemotional watch. The accents don’t help: the actors all speaking English dialogue with ’Allo-’Allo accents (with Jean Reno thrown in for a bit of Gallic authenticity). Nowhere in the film is the moral ambiguity of the period starker than in its dramatic opening scene, in which a Jewish father, Benjamin, is separated from his daughter Anya as they flee deportation. A gripping historical adventure by much-loved and award-winning author of War Horse, Michael Morpurgo. Soon to be a major motion picture, starring Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp.

Jo, a 13-year-old shepherd (Noah Schnapp) forced to grapple with difficult realities herding sheep with his mum, played Elsa Zylberstein in the 2020 drama Waiting for Anya Families can talk about what preteens and teens know about the Holocaust. What upset them in Waiting for Anya? Why? Waiting for Anya doesn’t disguise this is where some of these Jewish people ended up,” he said. “I was telling a story about a small community which did gather around, and they existed.” Waiting for Anya film is true to the plot and spirt of Michael Morpurgo’s book. It reminds us that good and bad is never all on one side. A tearjerker’ – Nicolette JonesFormer Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo needs no introduction. He is one of the most successful children's authors in the country, loved by children, teachers and parents alike. Michael has written more than forty books for children including the global hit War Horse, which was made into a Hollywood film by Steven Spielberg in 2011. In an age when news is readily accessible, Jewish News provides high-quality content free online and offline, removing any financial barriers to connecting people. He added: “Most people would have looked out the window and seen these trains. I wish they would have asked questions. Some of them might have been antisemitic but most weren’t, they just looked the other way to save their skins.

And it showed to me the way in which a French boy understood the war, compared to how a Jewish man understood the war. How do Jo, Benjamin, Madame Horcada, and Grandpère demonstrate courage, compassion, teamwork, and integrity? Why are these important character strengths? Do any other characters in this movie show these qualities? What about the Korporal? In what ways does his complicated character demonstrate empathy? In what ways is he reprehensible? Benjamin told her that if they parted they would reunite in the village where Widow Horcarda and Jo live. So throughout the whole novel Benjamin is waiting for his daughter to return so that they can become a family again – this is how the novel gets its title.

Did we miss something on diversity?

In the first collaboration between media outlets from different faiths, Jewish News worked with British Muslim TV and Church Times to produce a list of young activists leading the way on interfaith understanding. There’s no shortage of oys in the world but Jewish News takes every opportunity to celebrate the joys too, through projects like Night of Heroes, 40 Under 40 and other compelling countdowns that make the community kvell with pride. stars (7/10 hearts). Wow, this was not what I expected... in a good way. I expected your usual WWII story, with the good guys hiding the Jews from the bad Nazis and triumphing. Before making the film, which was shot on location in rural southern France, Cookson travelled to the area to speak to residents, some of whom had first-hand memories of life under occupation. It made me think and feel in the perspective of different characters and how they coped with life in such terrible circumstances. For instance, the Corporal was a family man who wasn't a bully or mean and enjoyed sharing stories about his life (in a similar mountain village in Germany) with Jo.
