Merida is, I believe, the first Disney Princess whose story doesn’t revolve around catching a boyfriend/husband (technically, Lilo was first…but she’s also not a princess). Tons of young girls tried archery as a result of that film. Where it took a big hit is that it was followed seventeen months later by Frozen, which is still so popular that neither Anna nor Elsa have been inducted into the official Disney Princess lineup.
