About this deal

Weezer formed in Los Angeles in 1992, and initially struggled to engage audiences, who were more interested in grunge. In November, they recorded a demo, The Kitchen Tape, which brought them to the attention of DGC owner Geffen Records. Weezer selected Ocasek to produce because of his work with the Cars. Most of the album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City between August and September 1993. The group treated the guitars and bass as a single, 10-string instrument, playing in unison. Guitarist Jason Cropper was fired during recording, as the band felt he was threatening their chemistry; he was replaced by Brian Bell. A "deluxe edition" of the album was released on March 23, 2004, including the original album and a second disc, Dusty Gems and Raw Nuggets, containing B-sides and rarities. [37] As of December 2007, the "deluxe edition" had sold 86,000 copies. [38] The second disc is also available separately.

NME credited the album as a formative influence on melodic emo. [64] AllMusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave the album 5/5, writing: "Although the group wears its influences on its sleeve, Weezer pulls it together in a strikingly original fashion, thanks to Cuomo's urgent melodicism, a fondness for heavy, heavy guitars, a sly sense of humor, and damaged vulnerability, all driven home at a maximum volume." Weezer was certified gold in just under seven months after its release on December 1, 1994. It was certified platinum on January 1, 1995; since then it has gone three times multi-platinum in the United States. As of December 2007, the album had sold 3,146,000 copies in the US (Weezer's best-selling album to date), peaking at #16 on the Billboard 200. In 2003, the album was ranked number 297 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. A 2-CD deluxe edition was released in 2004. Also in 2003, Pitchfork Media named The Blue Album the 26th best album of the 1990s. The Blue Album received critical acclaim. [49] Rolling Stone praised the album in their year-end review, saying "Weezer's Rivers Cuomo is great at sketching vignettes (the Dungeons & Dragons games and Kiss posters that inspire the hapless daydreamer of 'In the Garage'), and with sweet inspiration like the waltz tempo of 'My Name Is Jonas' and the self-deprecating humor of lines like "I look just like Buddy Holly / And you're Mary Tyler Moore", his songs easily ingratiate." [50] Robert Christgau of The Village Voice was less complimentary and awarded the album a "neither" rating. [51] The "Buddy Holly" video won four awards at the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, including prizes for Breakthrough Video and Best Alternative Video. [52] In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it number 294 on its updated “ 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list. [53] Legacy [ edit ] List of Blue Album Accolades". Acclaimed Music. One great tune. ("Buddy Holly".) A handful of other good tunes — good, not great. (The choruses of "No One Else" (alas); the opening guitars in "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here"; the choruses of "The Sweater Song", which I still never need to hear again; the verses of "Surf Wax America", which is harmless fun; the choruses of "Say It Ain't So"; the bass line of "Only in Dreams".) Boring singer. Flabby, tiresome, typically '90s guitar sound. Emotionally retarded lyrics, the kind written by former high school loners who probably deserved to be loners. (')Rhythm(') section that's barely even trying. Some truly obnoxious vocal harmonies. For what it's worth, the best Weezer album. Easily the best Weezer album. Geffen/UMG is reissuing Weezer’s first six albums on standard 180-gram vinyl on October 28. The quartet’s incredible run of Geffen Records releases – 1994’s Weezer (The Blue Album), 1996’s Pinkerton, 2001’s Weezer (The Green Album), 2002’s Maladroit, 2005’s Make Believe and 2008’s Weezer (The Red Album) – helped redefine the genre, mixing guitar hooks with a sense of geek-smart humor that radiated into the band’s popular live act and multitude of cutting-edge videos and visuals. It sounds fine sometimes, but a lot of times the audio clips, especially when Rivers is saying 't', 'ch' and 'sss' sounds. I find that it's really noticeable during 'No One Else' with all of it's pronounced 's' sounds. During the outro to "Undone - The Sweater Song" where it's building up and there's a lot of noise, it's pretty bad on this record with how overwhelming it is. DeRogatis, Jim (July 3, 1994). 'Buddy Holly' was alright I guess, 'In the Garage' was the first song to grip me, probably because of the lyricism. Now before giving an album a score out of 5, or really giving it a look, I need to hear it at least twice. All the way through, no stops. Then it can be shuffled, but this time I look at the lyrics, let them sink in. I didn't need to look at the lyrics after the second listen. They were in my head.

Fifteen songs were rehearsed for the album during early practice sessions in New York in preparation for the Electric Lady Studios album recording. Ten of the songs appear on the album, but four of the songs were cut: " Lullaby for Wayne", " I Swear It's True", " Getting Up and Leaving", and a reprise version of " In The Garage." The other song, " Mykel and Carli", was attempted during the Electric Lady sessions, but was also abandoned. It would be recorded a year later and became a popular B-side, and eventually get a proper release on the "Undone - The Sweater Song" single. Weezer, known better to fans as The Blue Album, is Weezer’s first and most successful studio album. It was released on May 10, 1994. Three strong singles ( “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Say It Ain’t So,” and “Buddy Holly”) pushed both the album and the band to the front of the post-Kurt Cobain alternative scene, and then even further into mainstream success. The album was produced by The Cars lead singer Ric Ocasek, after Weezer was pressured by Geffen Records to avoid a self-produced album. On the choice, frontman Rivers Cuomo notes, “I’d always admired The Cars and Ric Ocasek’s songwriting and production skills.” Grassi, Tony. "Photo Gallery: The Top 10 Guitar Albums of 1994". GuitarWorld.com . Retrieved November 8, 2011.Both " No One Else" and " The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" are lyrically connected, with Cuomo describing the narrator of "No One Else" as "the jealous-obsessive asshole in me freaking out on my girlfriend" and claiming that "'The World has Turned and Left Me Here' is the same asshole wondering why she's gone."
