About this deal

One of the main advantages of non-woven membrane is that it doesn’t fray when it’s cut, so exposed edges won’t disintegrate over time. It’s also permeable, often more so than woven weed membrane, and will let moisture reach the soil below. The recommended minimum depth of gravel should be 50mm (5cm) placed over a heavy duty membrane. Any less depth and the membrane will be noticeable. And those covered with aggregate that looked so smart for a while. Now there is detritus gathering between the stones, enough for seeds to germinate. And once they penetrate the fabric… it’s a familiar tale. The fabric is UV stabilised and shouldn’t degrade when exposed to the sun’s rays for long periods. It’s suitable for many different uses such as landscaping, driveways, flowerbeds and patios and is straightforward to lay.

Cut holes in the membrane for plants – if you are laying the weed control fabric around plants, you may need to cut holes in it to let them poke through. Bear in mind, the more holes you cut in the membrane, the more chance you are giving weeds to come through. Making as few as possible, as small as possible, is the best way. Don’t in a million years lay your fabric liner/membrane without spraying a damn good dose of weed killer first. Take full advantage of the link I’ve provided you with. The Gallup weed killer is near on commercial strength and you will not be disappointed. Knowing how bogged down we are with rules in the UK this is a super strength product and right on the legal limit of Glyphosate available for UK residential use. The UK government have authorised up to 360g/l which is seriously strong! Lay your weed membrane fabric to prevent weeds But what the client expects, and what they get, may be very different, even though I might provide exactly what they request. It is a good idea to have a trug to hand to place the excavated soil from the planting hole whilst putting in the plants. Leaving soil on top of the

The What...

Woven Weed Membrane fabric is made by weaving polypropylene tapes together. Using this crisscross pattern makes the fabric super-strong but limits its drainage capabilities compared with the non-woven variety. The strength and hard-wearing qualities of woven weed membrane give it a high tensile strength, making it suitable for use under patios, paths, parking areas and for other applications where a high strength but economical membrane is essential. Woven or non-woven weed membrane can be a gardener’s best friend and whether you are looking for ground stabilisation, separation of sub-base layers, aggregates and other materials, or drainage and filtration, there is now a fabric that is right for the job. If not top dressing the weed membrane with a mulch then look for a version that is UV Resistant if exposed to direct sunlight. Constant exposure to UV rays will shorth the life of the landscape fabric, making it less effective in stopping weed growth. Choose one that offers UV protection What weeds will they stop from growing? Application: NW1000 is a n extra heavy duty, non-woven geotextile 100gsm with superior durability and mechanical resistance, providing ultimate performance in separation, filtration, drainage and reinforcement. EARTHWORX NW1000 is a quality geotextile fabric, manufactured from 100% polypropylene fibres to a high specification, which makes it suitable for demanding civil engineering projects particularly those with areas subject to a large volume of vehicular traffic and large imposed loads. If you have a sloped garden, you may want to use a membrane which is suitable for a sloping incline. These membranes control weeds and soil erosion. They’ll keep the earth from sliding by essentially securing it in place.

Firstly you’ll also want to take this opportunity to level the area as best as possible. If you level the area, the result will be less gravel, or if you go for a nice Cotswold chip (which I didn’t) then the costs are amplified so getting a level area first is a really important factor. Here’s a look at another patch that was dug up and levelled too – this was next to the house and all muddy as you can see, not nice to have next to the house! We made a bit of a mess hence my son helping with the petrol pressure washer to clean up the patio 😀 Levelling your area well ready for the membrane – I learned the hard way on the bit between the sheds so I got this right! Use a high quality weed killer before laying your membrane to double up and be sureIn the vast majority of light-use constructions (patios, driveways, footpaths, etc) there is absolutely no need for a membrane to be placed between sub-base and the bedding layer: it achieves almost nothing, as a well-selected sub-base material will have what we call a 'tight' or 'close' finish, that is, there will be very few, if any, significant voids. Further: when constructing a sub-base, the good contractor will 'blind' the surface with fines or grit sand to ensure that there are no nasty voids that could gobble up the bedding material. This sturdy material has a low carbon footprint and is fully compostable, leaving no synthetic residues. It was easy to cut and peg down and felt substantial and slightly woolly. The soil under the membrane remained moist and was 3°C warmer than bare soil. By the end of May there was a smattering of weed growth under the membrane, and the material itself didn’t show any deterioration so could be reused. Others on test
