About this deal

Florence responded to Chidera saying: “You’ve outright denied my entire reality, multiple times in your messages.” The Slumflower proceeded to point out the “white supremacy” behind Google’s algorithm. In a series of screenshots of Google searches for ‘Chidera Eggerue feminist book’, Women Don’t Owe You Pretty appeared alongside The Slumflower’s own works. Alongside this, much of her artwork is accompanied by mantras that, quite frankly, we need to hear more often. One of these in her book is, ‘feeling guilty for past mistakes and behaviours does nothing for you or the people you harmed, unless you use it to change your behaviour’. Again, she is right and she should say it again. a b c Aspinall, Georgia (15 June 2020). " 'I Just Want To Make Women Wake Up To Their Power': Florence Given On Why You Will Feel Uncomfortable Reading Her New Book". Grazia . Retrieved 20 December 2020. Women Don't Owe You Pretty' is advertised as an "accessible leap into feminism" and it is exactly that. I already know the majority of stuff Florence Given talks about here, but it was great to be reminded of certain things and be introduced to a couple of new ones that made me think. It's a fantastic book that's well written, easy to read and beautifully illustrated, but I definitely have some problems with it.

The final chapter of the book really reaffirmed to me how important it is to reflect upon how far you’ve come and to recognise your achievements. I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on what’s coming next, so I don’t celebrate what I’ve achieved, healed from or should feel proud about.’In 2018, she launched a petition to cancel Netflix's controversial fat-shaming series 'Insatiable', it gained over 300,000 signatures in a matter of days. The story became global news and she appeared on many news networks across the US and UK, as well as being interviewed for various publications including Huffington Post and Grazia.

After discovering that this author lifted and plagiarized the work of Chidera Eggerue (theslumflower), i am taking my review down from a 4 to a 1. Florence Given hits on a lot of important issues - yet I feel she never truly delves into the subjects she touches on. She somehow said a lot without saying very much at all? Since reading Florence’s work, I have learnt to follow her mantra of being the love of my own life, a lesson which is essential for women’s liberation in a society which values us based on our desirability.’ During our working relationship, we fiercely supported Chidera through good times and the bad and continue to wish her the best. On 19th October 2020 Chidera ended her representation agreement with Diving Bell stating that our values no longer aligned. The title of this book is great, and really very feminist, and I presumed the content would be just as good. Unfortunately, Given rarely offered any solutions for her claims, and I feel like things were sugar coated, instead of facing issues head on. They also stated that while they worked with Chidera, they “relentlessly championed the importance of her voice and believed in her work” a b Galvao, Carol Abbott (24 June 2020). "Florence Given". Women Don’t Owe You Pretty has occupied a space in the Sunday Times top five for twelve consecutive weeks since its publication. Florence Given’s debut book combines thought-provoking essays alongside her original illustrations. In another screenshot that has since been deleted, The Slumflower suggested Florence write her “a fat cheque” because her name was helping boost sales, as Women Don’t Owe You Pretty appeared in all of her searches. It sometimes felt like an aggressive tone, and almost like a person should feel guilty if she did want to get married, or want to have sex. She covers SO many different things, some more briefly than others, but she doesn't really talk about class. It's mentioned in passing towards the end of the book. Very suspicious, but not a massive flaw by any means. We reached out to Chidera who told us: ‘Before publication, I made everybody on her team aware that I was uncomfortable with how much her work evolved from illustrations to suddenly looking and sounding a lot like mine.In a statement to Metro.co.uk founders Justin and Kim wrote: ‘When Chidera voiced her concerns with regards to Florence’s new book, Women Don’t Owe You Pretty, we and their shared book agent took Chidera’s concerns incredibly seriously. We listened to her, spoke at length and then acted immediately to facilitate a discussion between Chidera and Florence who in turn spoke at length. After which, Chidera told us that her concerns were entirely resolved and went on to give enthusiastic consent for her endorsement to be featured on the cover of Florence’s book. Florence spends far too much time talking about the male gaze. Yes, it's important and is basically the point of feminism. However, Florence is a bisexual woman, like myself, and I was disappointed to find that she doesn’t spare much thought for the female gaze. There was a brief mention of the "queer gaze" but she didn't really talk about what that enails/how exactly it differs from the male gaze. I think this could've been a valuable addition to the book, especially as it's constantly her being like "DON'T TAKE CRUMBS FROM MEN" (a valid notion). Chidera claimed that Florence’s new book, Women Don’t Owe You Pretty ,‘”looks the same” as her 2018 book, What a Time To Be Alone.

Florence Given said “women don’t owe you pretty,” and you know what? She’s right and she should say it again. If there was a genre titled ‘books you didn’t know you needed’, this one would be the first one on the list. At the absolute heart of this book, Florence aims to challenge sexist, racist and outdated narratives that we are fed by our patriarchal society.

Customer reviews

Beyond this, Florence still has her contract and book deal and Chidera does not. Chidera has also expressed her frustration with her “roster peers” being quiet on social media while watching her stories: The Slumflower and Florence Given are both under the same management team, Diving Bell, committed to “representing a new breed of changemakers and innovators”.
