About this deal

All the tie-ins to The Fold made me glad I read that book first. Actually, now I'm waiting for Clines to write another book to tie in with them.

Faint attempt to give cookie-cutter superheroes depth by giving introducing a 'past' and a 'present' narrative were insufficient. 'Nuff said. It took me in a direction I wasn’t expecting it to go to be honest. I had no idea what I was in for when I started listening to it. Not at all disappointed! I would class it as a cross between a horror/mystery/adventure/sci-fi/thriller. I've been mulling the ending of this book for a few days now, and I think I can now give it three stars. Right after I initially finished the book, I was leaning more toward two stars. I know many of my friends were enchanted by this story, but I just . . . wasn't. I really liked The Fold, and saw some similarities in the plot concepts. I felt like the presentation of that "alternate universe" or "multiverse" was handled much better in The Fold than in 14.There are plenty of times to be serious throughout the book and well not everyone makes it out alive (it’s a zombie book I don’t think anyone should be surprised by that) there is enough dark humor to keep me engaged in the story. Clines even included a game of your top 5 celebrity kills to kind of show how in the aftermath people are trying to keep spirits up. What an interesting take on the fall of society and there is even the new additional problems of former superheroes as Zombies. Wild Card Excuse: How did Tim learn his increasingly bizarre variety of talents? He published a book on it once. He smugly tells them it's a really good excuse once they stop believing it. It is significant but not in any real way, though you will think it is as you keep hearing about it. stars. This is probably a love or hate book for most. The main character is not endearing, the story not original (or enlightening )and yet, the approach was intriguing.

You see, that’s what you get more often than not when you read mysteries/ horrors/ thrillers. But in 14’s case, Cline has avoided such annoying midway chapter endings as well as inconsequential revelations. You have to read this book to really feel the difference it brings to the flow of the story compared to a clichéd mystery novel. This is really more like 3.5 stars, but I can't quite bring myself to make it four stars. I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series, though. Yes, there’s superheroes. The heroes are well written and have human failings, just like the rest of us, though they are larger than life. And zombies…zombies with a twist. They’re shamblers, as zombies should be, except the “special” ones who are not sprinters but they are oh, so much more! Well, what an unexpected gem 14 was! Loved the audiobook! What an amazing performance by Ray Porter! I honestly thought at times that I was listening to ten totally different voices! Extremely impressive! Got LOST in it! Leland "Mike" Erikson- The main character in The Fold, he has an eidetic memory which allows him to instantly recall anything he's ever seen.

Summary

worst of it is, the author is clueless about motives and goals of real people, committing every annoying horror movie trope there is. that is, they all act in the most illogical way ever. and when they're not acting illogically, they're acting like they never left highschool. come to think of it, if this whole thing took place in a high school dormitory, with everyone's physical ages brought down, it would make more sense. Superheroes and zombie novels appeal to the fourteen-year-old boy in me, and when I read one, I am usually disappointed because I am no longer a fourteen-year-old boy. Ex-Heroes is the ultimate superheroes+zombies mashup, with the Earth's surviving superheroes (okay, Los Angeles's surviving superheroes) protecting what remains of the living human population from the undead hordes after the zombie apocalypse. So, after the outbreak happens and Cairax (Maxwell’s demon skin) is out saving humanity, it doesn’t seem weird to ‘have relations’ with Jessica Alba’s zombified corpse. To Cairax it’s more like jerking off than anything else. And besides, so far he’s proven immune to the virus. I found certain parts sophomoric and trite. I will not say the writing was lazy, but parts have been done before. There was not much new here, I had narrowed down the most likely to betray (I was right) and in what fashion. I also was right about who might die though I was hoping one of my choices were wrong. Wow! What a book! My cousin told me to read this and I am glad I did!. This has to be the most unique and exciting thing I have read in a long time. The story is so unpredictable that you really cannot guess what is going to happen next - but boy I sure was trying to guess! The story just gripped my imagination big time. The events going on in here were just so strange that you focus your attention on the things you learn and you try to figure it out. Because how can you not?

Clines made his first fiction sale, The Hatbox, to online journal The Harrow. [7] He continued to sell zombie and Lovecraftian short stories to anthologies before he began writing his first published novel, Ex-Heroes, in 2008. [6] Bibliography [ edit ] Threshold [8] series [ edit ] Title Reasonable Authority Figure: The government is quite understanding despite the fact our heroes almost ended the world. Despite this, I'm not going to give 14 a ten out of ten. This is going to be a strange sort of complaint because it's related to much of what I find appealing about this book but I think Peter could have gone darker. The Twilight Zone rarely needed a high body count, or one at all, to make itself the seminal work of horror television it was. However, for much of the book, things relatively lighthearted. While he does some serious damage to the characters, I expected the sheer scope of the final revelations to blast some cast member's sanity. This book has being compared to the TV series Lost and I can understand why. Because as I have said earlier, this is one of the tautest mystery/horror thrillers I have read in a long long time. Prad Bitt hoped that nobody from the Mafia would find him here but then suddenly there was a noise of car tires screeching on the gravel from outside. He cringed and slid under the stall as far as possible. There was a loud blast and half of the rotten door splintered.

Publication Order of Anthologies

The plot contained a good amount of cliche, and that made it a bit bad. I hate cliches, and horror novels normally contain only a few. I'm not going to include the cliches anymore because that would result into spoilers. Let's just say I saw the ending coming, and also most of what happened in between. If you want something original, then yes the premise would make you happy, but the overall thing wouldn't. ANYWAY. So I finished the last 20% of the book, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. Some of it was a bit horror movie predictable, but all in all, I liked it a lot. My favorite parts were the origin stories, the heroes and zombies are both relatively new to this world. So, for instance, you might see the greatest movie you’ve ever seen, and then give it 0 Cannarfs because it was exactly as good as you expected it to be. Also for instance, you might see a bad movie and give it +3 Cannarfs because you expected it to be worse. I felt it was interesting to a different type of sci fi reader and so tried to put aside my own bias to give it a fair analysis.
