About this deal

Intend to screw the boards into the cross battens but how should I connect A) legs onto joists and B) battens onto legs?

As you have already laid the 200mm of fibreglass technically option B is the only one you can take. With option A you be reducing the level of insulation from one that meets current regulations (min 270mm) to one that does not which is illegal as you would be making it worse. Make sure your loft space have adequate ventilation. Ideally there should be a cross flow of air in your loft, from one eave to another. The air enters your loft via the soffit boards within the eaves.

Insulation requirements for homes have increased dramatically over the years. Most older homes have insulation between the joists only, usually 100mm high. Loft boards were simply laid on top of the joists then screwed in. Current insulation requirements recommended by the Energy Saving Trust are 270mm. This figure is based on glass fibre wool insulation. Manufactured in the UK from recycled materials, the Loft Leg is designed to be strong enough to walk on and store up to 50kg per square metre. Thermal studies have shown that pressing your insulation can reduce its thermal properties by more than 50%, the Loft Leg avoids insulation compression saving energy and money.Government guidelines recommend that we insulate with 270mm of quilt insulation to achieve a U value of 0.16. Thermal studies have shown that compressing your insulation can reduce its thermal properties by more than 50%. A 175mm Loft Leg fixed on top of a 100mm truss or ceiling joist provides a lightweight, cost effective solution. Below is an image of a loft being topped up with more insulation. After we installed space blanket insulation between the rafters, we then placed 200mm space blanket on top. Always make sure you apply more insulation cross ways (90 degree’s to the insulation underneath). This helps to prevent cold spots within your loft. These boards have a tongue and grove system, which means they simply slot together. The separate boards are narrow enough to get through your loft hatch. Fortunately there are companies which sell down light covers that are fire retardant, and draft proofing. Plastic Down Light Covers

Buy some extra wood and extend the height of the joists above the insulation so i can then board over it Now screw the board into the legs beneath it using 2 per leg. This board should also have a total of 8 screws fixed into the loft legs. This will help you create great storage space in your attic or loft while allowing the installation of suitable insulation material which will help reduce your heating bills significantly over the lifetime of your home. The loft legs can be spread apart a maximum distance of 600mm centres. This means they are ideal for joists that are spaced 600mm or under. The diagrams in this post show how to install loft legs for 300mm joists, just to give you an idea of how you go about installing them. How to Board your Loft – Step by Step Guide Step 1 – Remove the Old Insulation Anyhow, loft legs are only 175mm tall. Added to 18mm floor, makes under 200mm added height, on top of the joist.
