About this deal

This story is super sweet, and the shy affection the girls have towards each other whispers of a more serious relationship in future volumes. Kaeda is a pretty shallow character, so hopefully her air-headedness gets developed more as well. The main thing this story has on other romances is the setting being in a high school aquarium (which is apparently a real aquarium in Japan). Loveridge, Lynzee (August 23, 2018). "Raise wa Tanin ga Ii, Senpai ga Uzai Kōhai no Hanashi Take Top Prizes at Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards". Anime News Network. Archived from the original on May 10, 2021 . Retrieved January 13, 2023. Konatsu, meanwhile, is herself a fish out of water with the move to her new home with her aunt. She's very much going through the “neither fish nor fowl” stage of adolescence, torn between thinking she's old enough to do things on her own and really, really wanting her dad, so meeting Koyuki gives her something different to focus on. She almost immediately sees the disconnect between Koyuki's actual self and the public idea of her, and that makes her even more interested in the older girl. Why did Koyuki approach Konatsu first when she's so withdrawn and shy? How can Konatsu help her to become more comfortable? Why does she even want to? Turning to Ibuse's tale of the salamander and the frog may simply be the most relevant way to figure these things out that Konatsu can think of – that salamander Koyuki has become so trapped in the cave of people's expectations of her that she needs a frog to help her figure it all out. Even if she's falling for the older girl, it's in a much less codependent way, as the storyline when they're separated by Koyuki's class trip in the fourth book shows – Konatsu can still function while missing her friend, while Koyuki is in a perpetual state of anxiety about their separation.

The romance is very slow burn, but also very soft and sweet! The little moments really take over the whole scene, whether its small hand holds, sharing food, or just the longing gazes.protagonists are always thinking about how they feel for the other person, and I'm sitting at the edge of my seat just waiting for one of them to confess. A Tropical Fish Yearns For Snow continues to surprise me with each and every volume. Despite this series being known for its rather slow pacing, it works incredibly well for the thematic elements it touches on like loneliness, post-high school plans and the struggles with communicating your feelings to those you love. So the mangaka claims that this is a story all about *friendships* as in, platonic relationships. Which is fair, because there are platonic relationships in the manga. And I'm all for healthy platonic relationships, whether they are between a male or a female, or a male and another male, or a female and another female. Sometimes a book isn’t giving you what you want and that’s not okay. You’re waiting and waiting for romance to finally erupt between two leads and you have an author who is coy about every last detail on where the story is going.

Hagino builds the quiet, slice of life atmosphere even more in this volume, slowing the story down which doesn't impact the overall flow of the plot. The author does this in such a brilliant way making you feel so connected to the daily school and club life, even feel a deep connection to this charming town. I liked that Kaede had more of a spotlight in this volume as well, she's been the bubbly, easy-going and talkative supporting character thus far in the series (also a good friend to Konatsu and Koyuki). However, in this volume its clear that...she's lonely too. It was a nice change of pace to see how others deal with loneliness and was such a thematically strong element of this volume. Also, can we take a second to appreciate how SUPPORTIVE Koyuki's parents are?? They want her to be happy and support her anyway they can, which is something I can relate to...YET I can also relate to Koyuki in her feelings of isolation as life continues to move forward at that age (or older). A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow is written and illustrated by Makoto Hagino. It was serialized in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Maoh magazine from the August 2017 issue sold on June 27, 2017, [2] to the May 2021 issue sold on March 27, 2021. [3] Nine tankōbon volumes were published from December 27, 2017, to June 25, 2021. [4] [5] Viz Media licensed the series for release in North America and began releasing it in November 2019. [6] No. Hagino builds such a fascinating slice-of-life school atmosphere at Nanahama High School with the various clubs and just making it a very unique place to be! I liked the inclusion of having the club involvement be mandatory for students, it just added more to the distinct atmosphere of Nanahama. The paneling and artwork are perfect, allowing for a slow, introspective view of the story! The inclusion of aquatic elements like the ocean, marine animals, all add to the special world that these two have carved for themselves and its really beautiful.

I especially liked in this volume when Konatsu told her classmate not to cling to stereotypes. And Konatsu and Koyuki had a sweet moment on the beach. The things the girls are worried and happy about aren't big melodramatic stuff but something we all might face at one time or another, so it can be pretty relatable (oh Koyuki, I know the difficulty of saying no too...). There's such wonderful imagery and metaphors woven throughout this first volume, especially when it comes to salamanders and how it relates to Konatsu and Koyuki specifically. Its a beautiful message about the two allow each other to escape their loneliness despite this sense of being trapped and isolated. Though Koyuki feels more of a weight from expectations of those around her and in turn, she never really feels understood. All the details about the marine life are also beautifully woven into the series as well, can't wait to see how the author builds on it!

I like how each of them got their own scenes with Kaede their other classmate, whose the bubbly, outgoing energy mixing among their quiet, introverted personalities. Consequently, seeing these two hang out is one of the most pleasantly enjoyable moments since the series started. It was amazing to see Koyuki just enjoy herself unabashedly for a change. There’s a full on Moment where they’re collapsed on the floor sharing a look and it’s just the perfect summation.

I love how the manga contains a hidden meaning. It was right there at the beginning of the story and continued influencing the story towards to conclusion. I also love how Konatsu compares the salamander to Koyuki, as well as the manga itself representing it as loneliness. The overall story might not be that outstanding, but the storytelling is something remarkably beautiful and worth mentioning.
