Most alloy wheels are manufactured using casting, but some are forged. Forged wheels are usually lighter, stronger, but much more expensive than cast wheels. There are two types of forged wheels: one piece and modular. Modular forged wheels may feature two- or three-piece design. Typical multi-piece wheels consist of the inner rim base, outer rim lip and wheel center piece with openings for lug nuts. All parts of a modular wheel are held with bolts. BBS RS is one of the most famous three-piece modular forged wheels. [1] Health and Safety regulations prevent the manual handling of anything over 30kg by the courier company employees. Wheels are essential parts of a car, and alloy wheels are essential styling parts which make the difference between ordinary and show-stopping. Available in all kinds of colours and designs, alloy wheels are a sure-fire enhancement to make sure your car stands out from the crowd.Once wrapped in bubble wrap, they need to be boxed, or wrapped in cardboard. Please use new double walled boxes, used boxes offer less protection.

We recommend wrapping each wheel in multiple layers of bubble wrap. This should protect them from impact damage, as well as the nightmare scenario of water damage. Take extra care to reinforce the protection around the face of the alloy - this is the area where you really don’t want any scratches. Secure the bubble wrap with strong parcel tape and you’re ready to box the wheel! Box the wheels up There will be an administrative surcharge to pay when collecting anything over the safe handling weight of 30kg. Lighter wheels can improve handling by reducing unsprung mass, allowing suspension to follow the terrain more closely and thus improve grip, however not all alloy wheels are lighter than their steel equivalents. Reduction in overall vehicle mass can also help to reduce fuel consumption. Here is what the full wheel & tire looks like in boxes (which I then bought bigger boxes to combine them into): Make sure the price is competitive by getting a number of quotes. You may choose to go for a quote that isn't the cheapest because it's more convenient, or another courier has a better reputation. You do need to make sure you're happy with the price quoted, and that it is reasonable compared to other quotes. Alloy wheels are prone to galvanic corrosion, which can cause the tires to leak air if appropriate preventive measures are not taken. Also, alloy wheels are more difficult to repair than steel wheels when bent, but their higher price usually makes repairs cheaper than replacement. If the wheels still have tires mounted, then cut out cardboard circles to cover the wheel itself (like pictured at the top of this post – it doesn’t need to cover the tire, the rubber can be exposed).

box as shrnk wrap causes jams on the converyor belts - Anything that is found to be shrink wrapped will attract a retrospective surcharge or returned to sender at additional costs. Anything that exceeds 30kg will need to be collected by the sender in person from one of the national hubs (not local depot). There are some key rules to ensuring you get your wheels in good condition and choose the correct service for you: When processed using best practice methods, low pressure die casting wheels can offer improvements in ductility over magnesium wheels and any cast aluminium wheels, they remain less ductile than forged magnesium. It is prohibited to send the following rims, tyres or rims and tyre combinations through this service: When thinking about sending your alloy wheel in the post, you’ll need to consider which courier is best for you. This is especially important for sending alloy wheels due to the variation in size and weight between different wheels, as well as restrictions certain couriers may have. There are a couple of options – if you know a good tire or tuning shop in the area, give them a ring and see if they have any extra wheel boxes they’d be willing to give to you. Places like Discount Tire or even car dealerships get tons of wheels shipped to them every day, and generally they just throw out the boxes. This is easiest option since wheel companies have boxes built made specifically to ship wheels so you can just place the wheels in the box and be done. This process uses a die arranged in a large machine that has high closing force to clamp the die closed. The molten magnesium is poured into a filler tube called a shot sleeve. A piston pushes the metal into the die with high speed and pressure, the magnesium solidifies, and the die is opened, and the wheel is released. Wheels produced by this method can offer reductions in price and improvements in corrosion resistance, but they are less ductile and of lower strength due to the nature of high pressure die casting. Rims only and Tyre and Rim combinations MUST BE boxed, one unit per box. Rims only and Tyre and Rim combinations MUST NOT be shrink wrapped over the outer

The next step is to wrap the entire wheel in bubble wrap, we would recommend using 2 to 3 layers of the larger bubble type, as it offers more protection when sending alloy wheels, This process usually employs a steel die, it is arranged above the crucible filled with molten magnesium. Most commonly, the crucible is sealed against the die and pressurized air/cover gas mix is used to force the molten metal up a straw-like filler tube into the die. [10] If there is any space left inside the box, this can be filled with additional bubble wrap, polystyrene loose fill, or screwed up newspaper. Wheel box suitable for a pair of wheels. Cardboard box (66x66x29cm) with two seperate inserts to hold the wheels securely. The Manufacture of Aluminium Alloy Wheels | PDF | Applied And Interdisciplinary Physics | Metals". Scribd .
