Plot [ ] Issue 1 [ ] It has been almost a decade since the humans were forced to leave Pandora - but now they're returning - with an armada of heavily-armed starships! After years of peace, Jake Sully has settled down with Neytiri and raised a family, so for him, the stakes are even higher than when he first went to war against the corporate might of the RDA. I think I really only started enjoying comics and graphic novels when, like anime, I realised that the inherent ridiculousness is part of their charm - and embraced that aspect, rather than expecting comic tie-ins to be tonal extensions of their parent media. There’s some great stuff in it,” Cameron said. “I mean, you’ve got the Na’vi fighting with bows and arrows in zero-G. I mean, I’m there! I want to see that movie. But it just didn’t achieve enough of the overall story and thematic goals that I had in mind. So we’re turning it into a Dark Horse graphic novel. You’ll be able to see that interim battle that took place between movie one and movie two.”

Avatar: The High Ground was meant to be a direct sequel to 2009’s Avatar and a “prequel” to Avatar: The Way of Water. Set just a few years after the first movie, The High Ground follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) learning to raise a family with Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) while his enemies, the RDA, return to Pandora to finish what they’ve started. Joining Avatar.com is Sherri L. Smith, writer of Avatar: The High Ground; Corinna Bechko, writer of Avatar: Adapt or Die, a comic prequel to the first film; and Michael Heisler, who lettered both Avatar: Adapt or Die and Avatar: The High Ground, and also served as the letterer for Avatar: Tsu’tey’s Path and Avatar: The Next Shadow. Yeah. Na’vi in space. It sounds cool, but there’s a reason this idea was cut and reformed into the sequel we got with Avatar: The Way of Water. It really stretches your suspension of disbelief in a way that doesn’t mesh with James Cameron’s total immersion philosophy, something that has always been at the core of this franchise, even before it was a franchise.I don’t ruled out it might happen in future movies, but here, it seems so out of context. And anyways, why is Jake asking permission to the Olo'eyktan Council if all the warriors are from the Omaticaya clan? His clan? There are hallmarks here of what will show up in the first movie, Way of Water: the dynamics between Spider and Kiri, the kids doing stupid things and putting themselves in danger, Neytiri's mistrust of Spider, plenty of action, the youngest child always needing to be rescued, and Cameron's trademark strong and able female characters. I imagine that Way of Water was rewritten to add in these elements once this original script was bypassed. SMITH: Two great things about working in the world of Avatar. One is that being able to say to my husband, “I can’t cook dinner I have a Zoom call with Jim Cameron,” is pretty amazing — I won my marriage with this book. But another thing that really mattered to me about working on Avatar is the environmental message and the connection to the planet. That is something that I am very concerned about on our own world. Any stories we can tell that take people outside of their own baggage, but still give them what they need to bring home is really powerful, and the Na’vi let you do that. BECHKO: Honestly, I watched the movie a lot, and I watched it with different friends because I wanted to gauge how different people reacted to different things in the story. I watched with friends who were men, women, younger, older — I even drafted my best friend’s mom to watch it with me so I could get someone from a different generation. I also did a lot of research just looking at the types of animals on Earth to get more of an idea on ecosystems. After I did all that, I tried to forget it so that it would be in my subconscious, and then I sat down and wrote the story.

Issue 1 [ ] "Jake Sully maintains his position as leader of the Omatikaya Na'vi clan, but with their homeland in ruins, he begins to doubt his place among them. As the Na'vi and human feud persists, tensions between the tribes begin to escalate as longstanding family rivalries ignite--spawning treachery and betrayal!" In an interview with Inverse to promote The Way of Water, producer Jon Landau explains why Cameron’s intended sequel to Avatar, titled Avatar: The High Ground fell through. It was never not a full-fledged movie to [Cameron],” Landau tells Inverse. “It just wasn’t the right movie for ‘Avatar 2.’” AVATAR.COM : On the note of research and adaptation — Michael, could you explain for Avatar.com what the role of a letterer is, and how the process was different for writing out the Na’vi language versus English?
