About this deal

Since this is a universal lawnmower, which is mostly targeted at medium-to-large lawns, I tested the Bosch Rotak 34R on a medium-sized lawn with predominantly low growth and some tall grass around the edges. I tested this mower out in late autumn, so the grass was also damp and dewy.

Even though the manufacturers claim you don’t need to do any edge trimming after mowing because of the side combs, this wasn’t entirely true. While I don’t have walls or fences to test these against, I do have raised sleepers. Storage Less Efficient than it Should Be – The handles on the Bosch Rotak 34 R are supposed to fold down to reduce the size of the storage footprint of this mower, which in theory is a handy feature. Especially if you only have a small shed or garage that you keep your garden tools in. However, a lot of consumers complain about the ease of doing this, mainly due to the lower grade screws that are used to fasten the handle in place. As a result quite a few people just end up leaving the handles extended. Also, the 10 metre cable cannot be disconnected from the main body of the unit, and there’s no cable storage feature on the mower. So storage is definitely something Bosch could improve on with the Rotak 34 R. The hardened, ground steel blade has a cut width of 34 cm, and there are 6 cut height settings to choose from, ranging between 10 and 70 mm. The large 40 L grass box should enable you to cut the grass in one go without stopping to empty. The height adjustment feature on the Bosch Rotak 34R is very easy to use and can be operated with just one hand. Relatively Easy Assembly – It’s not as easy as pulling it out of the box and you’re ready to go; there is a little bit of work required on your part. But it shouldn’t be too difficult for you either, especially if you’ve assembled a few garden tools in the past. You’ll need to connect the handle and put together the grass basket. The latter task is the one that most people seems to struggle with, as the basket does feel a bit flimsy (on the plus side that does mean the mower overall is lighter) and might take you a few attempts to clip together.

With its integrated roller, side grass combs and 40-litre capacity grass box, the Bosch Rotak 34R has many impressive features. Bosch’s marketing brands this mower as being a universally great design equipped with expert features, so let’s see how well it really does when put to the test. True to the Bosch brand, the Rotak 34R had the trademark green on its base, with splashes of red on some of the caps and levers.

Customers rave that this lawn mower is extremely ease to manoeuvre. The front wheels allow you to get into awkward corners for an even, perfect cut every time you use it.

If you have a small to medium sized yard, then you will get a tremendous amount of use out of an electric lawnmower. Electric lawnmowers decrease in performance as their battery charge decreases, so this means that they are best used to cut a small amount of grass in a fast amount of time. Terrain Type The Bosch Rotak 34R has several features that make it impressive. These include an integrated roller, side combs to enable close edge trimming, 5 adjustable cutting heights (from 20 – 70 mm), a 40-litre grass box, and a 34 cm cutting diameter. You won’t need to be some kind of DIY expert to fit this one together. It should take a few minutes at most. As is custom these days, the majority of the mower comes pre-assembled so all you really need to do is attach the handle and clip together the grass box. The grass box comes in 2 halves, so you are required to clip this together yourself. It’s probably the “hardest” part of the assembly as the plastic is quite flexible (as most plastics are) and it can tend to move whilst you are trying to assemble it. The best way to do it is this: Get the first clip snapped into place at the rear and this will help to align all the others. Then move around the box, pushing each clip in individually whilst pressing down on the roof of the box with the palm of your hand. Jobs a good‘un! Bosch Rotak 34 – Performance Powerdrive Motor –I have to say that I am really impressed with the powerdrive motors that Bosch use in the Rotak range. They really are as advertised; they don’t bog down anywhere near as much as other motors I have used in the past. This doesn’t mean it’s won’t have to work harder in longer grass, but it does deal with those situations very nicely and you can hear that the motor has plenty of capacity to spare. A real powerhouse at the heart of this mower!
