Improving drainage will help. Making raised beds is a good way of doing this. Use treated boards, for example, to make beds 1-1.5m wide and at least 15cm higher than surrounding soil. Acid soils can be made more alkaline and much less prone to clubroot infection by the addition of lime or chalk. Lime is cheap, so this is the most economic way to keep down clubroot. Cabbage root fly Start your seeds in small pots in a greenhouse or propagator, with a decent peat-free compost. Sieve over the broccoli seedlings to give them a really strong start. Can be sown in drills in open ground when the soil warms up. Broccoli is a very British vegetable. The are sturdy plants that produce numerous spears for harvesting from February to April. Once the central head has been removed, this will encourage further smaller spears to be produced from the plant. These can be cut as required and lightly steamed or boiled. Our Seed Club: Due to ridiculous seed laws here in the UK, many of our fantastic vegetable seeds cannot in theory be supplied to the public, because they are not on the UK National List of permitted vegetable varieties1 But we do supply them to members of our seed club. A hybrid of Chinese kale and standard broccoli is referred to by various names in different parts of the world. In the UK, it is most widely known as Tenderstem Broccoli (which is a trademarked name), whilst in the US and other countries, it is called Baby Broccoli or Broccolini. It is long-stem broccoli that has edible leaves, flower shoots and tender stems, and is a perfect no-waste vegetable. Flavour-wise, it is similar to regular broccoli itself, with slightly sweeter notes and a softer texture. Low in calories and high in Vitamin C, it is certainly a healthy and nutritious vegetable to use in your cooking. How To Cook Tenderstem Broccoli? August or September in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel, to get a very early crop at the start of the following year. We absolutely love the combination of lemon, garlic and chilli to go with broccoli (all ingredients and full method in the recipe card below), but there are other flavours that go very well.More people are saving brassica seed now - and we'd like to encourage you to try it too: its incredibly easy, and you get so much seed, you'll have loads to give away. There's really no need for example to buy Kale seed from us every year at all. You just set aside a patch of good kale plants, and let them flower, making sure that you've got a reasonable number, that they are healthy, and that no other sorts are flowering nearby that might cross with them. You'll get lots of seeds in August.

This is a vegan adaptation of a recipe I wrote (and loved) for Tenderstem. You’ll need a 23cm cake tin. This amazing plant grows large bushes (4 ft tall) with delicious edible leaves. However the best bits are the hundreds & hundreds of flower shoots which you gather just before they show their tiny yellow petals. Add the flour, polenta, nutritional yeast, paprika, chilli flakes, baking powder, bicarb and salt, and stir well to combine. Stir in the flax seeds, yoghurt, milk and oil, and mix into a batter. Arrange the broccoli into two equal piles. Set one pile to one side, then finely chop the stems and florets of the other pile and put them in a large bowl. Broccoli seeds prefer to be sown and planted in a sunny position, in rich and firm soil, but not in soil that has recently been manured. The Real Seed Catalogue is produced by The Real Seed Collection Ltd ~ Company No 5924934 ~ VAT No 841181938 ~ DEFRA registered Seed Merchant No 7289 ~ Roast. See the full Roasted Tenderstem Broccolirecipe. It is hard to explain, but as well as the flavour, what is quite special about this plant is the texture when cooked. The maggots are usually too deep in the soil or inside plants for the insecticide to get at them. Earthing up affected older plants will sometimes let them root above the damaged areas, and may save the plants. Giving affected plants plenty of water with some liquid feed may also help overcome the damage.

We would really like to encourage you to have a go at saving seed from brassica family - that's the cabbages, kales, oriental vegetables, broccoli and turnip family. We know many of you save obvious ones like tomato and lettuce seed, but we've noticed that in the past people shied away from doing the biennial vegetables (plants that flower in their second year). Cabbage moths are on the wing at night during May and June, laying batches of round eggs on the leaf undersides that will hatch after two weeks. The caterpillars feed for at least a month before they mature. They pupate in the soil and generally hatch the following spring. But a few will hatch in late summer and into the autumn. They can be found in early winter if it’s mild. The chrysalids of the second generation hatch in the spring. Our Unique Structure: Because we have no shareholders. the main aim of the company is not to make huge profits, but instead to supply great seeds to home gardeners at reasonable prices, and to educate people about home seed-saving. Steam. It only takes about 4 minutes to cook in a colander placed above a simmering saucepan of water and covered with a lid ( a steam pan). Simply sprinkle some sea salt on top and serve. Mix with olive oil and Egyptian Dukkahand roast in the oven (the option we took in our Dukkah Roasted Vegetables with Spicy Couscous).

Galls vary from lumps covering the swollen bulbs on turnips and swedes to finger-like projections on fibrous-rooted brassicas. Some of the most spectacular galls occur on Chinese cabbage and other oriental greens.Caterpillars strip foliage, tunnel into the hearts of cabbages and spoil produce with their droppings or frass. There are two cabbage-white butterflies that do serious damage: the large white and the small white. Damage is also caused by moth caterpillars.
