The base spirit for Broker's Gin is quadruple-distilled pure grain spirit made from English wheat. The flavour is provided by ten natural botanical ingredients, the primary one of which is juniper berries. The botanicals are steeped in the base spirit in the still for 24 hours. The spirit is then distilled a fifth and final time. Only the truly committed (or committable) still use copper pot stills to produce truly different artisianal style products, with the resulting heavier and more complex flavors than what the column or coffey stills others produce. “Gin is a fiddlely thing to produce” to quote a (obviously English) distiller friend of mine made especially difficult to produce with a pot still. Paradoxically costs about 1/2 of the price of other premium gins. I tried it in a Negroni, and found that those earthy notes were amplified: think cinnamon merengue, or carmelized oranges with a touch of fresh juniper. The palette is hot and spicy juniper. A good deal of heat and warmth. 94 proof, enough to keep you toasty on a winter’s eve. Starts with a hint of juniper before the citrus aromas absolutely flourish. Martini is nice, but I find it good and not exceptional. I’m looking for that one thing to stand out here and quite unfortunately, complimented with Vermouth, it seems to take on an “everyday” sort of feeling. Where’s that balance? Drinks: Makes a excellent martini, but remember to adjust your dilution and cooling to compensate for the slightly higher proof (in other words shake it a little longer). That being said, it will chill better than most as the higher proof seems to keep the botanicals blended better at a colder temperature than most and gives you a lovely molten glass appearance.
