About this deal

The Windmaster outperforms other stoves in windy conditions because the recessed burner has a lip around it, and there’s very little open space between the burner head and the pot. This means there’s not a lot of room for wind to interfere with your flame, and the result is a faster and more efficient boil in unideal conditions. Solo’s Alcohol Burner also features a screwtop cap and rubber gasket, so you can store liquid fuel directly inside. It’s a truly compact system. This stove takes about 5 minutes to bring a liter of water to boil (although wind and weather can add a few minutes to boil time). It weighs just 3.5 ounces and is super compact. For a wood-burning stove, the BioLite also has an impressive boil time at a little over 4.5 minutes.

It's possible to run the Flash at something approaching a low simmer, but only just - and definitely not in the wind. As with the Reactor, this is a stove for boiling the living daylights out of water, rather than more general camp cookery. In addition, you can only use this stove with compatible cookware from Jetboil - it's not possible to use any old flat bottomed pot. On this, the Soto Amicus, Soto's third entry of this type into the US market, I think they've finally gotten it right. One does rotate the support into place, but on the Amicus, one does not have to find the "sweet spot" on the pot support to get it to rotate. One simply pushes it up into place in one smooth, effortless motion, and, once in place, they're not going anywhere. One has to push up and then push out, against the spring loading, to retract the pot support. It's easy to retract the pot support, but it's unlikely to happen on its own. Our only con with this stove was that It took more than a few tries with matches and is much easier to light with a lighter.

Performance Comparison

With all the pots that have a recommended max capacity (1l for the 1.7l Reactor, 0.5l for the 1l Reactor etc.), it's still possible to boil nearly full, but especially with the Reactor and it's super fast boil times, you have to be very very careful to watch the stove and turn it off (and get the pot off, because the radiant burner still puts out enough heat to keep the water slightly boiling even after shutoff) immediately once it reaches rolling boil. Obviously not recommended by the manufacturer, since it could boil over pretty easily, and if it did, the hot water over the burner might possibly trigger the thermal shutdown mechanism (and perhaps even burst your canister, which would not be pleasant at all). Always read the instructions. (Yes, even if you are familiar with camp stoves.) The instructions will tell you how to prime your stove, and might even have tips on cleaning and repair. We’ve heard reports of problems with the fuel connector threads stripping, but we haven’t experienced a problem in more than a year of testing. Canister gas stoves generally cook well. They have a highly adjustable flame. If you adjust the flame well and have appropriate cookware, there isn't really much in the way of limitations to what you can cook. The Amicus is no exception. On the Amicus, I was able to get a barely there flame capable of a very low simmer. Arguably one of the smallest and most lightweight canister stoves on the market, the BRS-3000T takes portable to a whole new level. Fitting inside a draw-string bag that literally fits within the palm of your hand, the 3000T sets a precedent of how small a camping stove can be.

Lightweight, works in the wind, great piezo igniter, fuel efficient, very stable for a small canister stove Not all stoves are created equal, and nowhere is this more evident than in the frigid temps of winter camping conditions. If you camp in the warmer monthsonly, this isn’t a concern. Stoves like the JetBoil Flash offer solid wind and weather resistance for cold winter camping; (photo/Mary Murphy)Never cook inside your tent or vehicle. On top of being a fire hazard, this can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and death. If you camp frequently in rainy climates, invest in a tarp and some guy line for a safe overhead kitchen shelter.

Simply put, this stove is the best due to its combination of light weight, consistent performance, boil time, and price.Note: In addition to this review, I have two preliminary posts on the Soto Amicus that contain additional information and photographs: The butane or isobutane and propane gas mix varies from brand to brand. Fortunately most canister stoves like the BRS-3000T can be used with any brand of canister including Jetboil, MSR, Snow Peak, Optimus and other brands. We were stunned at how fast bubbles began to dance in the pot, taking as few as just over two minutes to reach a rolling boil (depending on elevation and wind conditions). This makes it a solid choice for group trips where you need to whip up multiple meals fast. It also works great for melting large amounts of snow for water. On the flipside, canisters can’t be refilled, causing additional waste (they can be recycled, but you’ll need to take them to a recycling facility). And they’re prone to freezing up or providing a weak flame in cold winter conditions. We do not claim to be scientists, though we have tried to make our tests as objective, controlled, and repeatable as possible. We did our testing in a garage at 5000 feet (about 1524 meters), where the boiling point of water is 202.97° F (about 94.98° C). We tested the time it took for one liter of water to make a 1.7-quart kettle whistle with each of the small canister and liquid gas stoves. For the stoves with integrated pots, we tested how long it took for them to reach a rolling boil. With each test, we began with a full 4-ounce fuel canister and weighed it for the wind test. Then after the wind test, we weighed the canister and tested for boiling without wind. All of the fuel bottles were full, and the canisters used were identical.
