Who doesn’t love the Miffy story book series? And this charming book is brilliant for introducing budding artists to colour, patterns and shape. Join Miffy as she takes inspiration from a visit to an art gallery and decides to become an artist herself. The activity book is filled with fun matching games, puzzles and colouring-in. Best for artists just starting out.Best for: introducing and explaining modern art to 8-12s. It would also suit an older audience, including teenagers and even adults who want to understand modern art a little better themselves What better way to teach kids about art than with colorful picture books that are themselves works of art. With no need for words, talented illustrators have created enchanting narratives for toddlers, such as Joanne Liu’s My Museum, where the main character discovers that the best type of art is found within your own imagination. This is one of a new series of story books for children on great women through history. Really well written and beautifully illustrated, it tells the story of Frida Kahlo in a way that younger children can understand. The book finishes with a short biography and extra facts about the artist, including where to discover more about her. Other figures in the series include Rosa Parks, Marie Curie and Coco Chanel. Although best for ages 6 – 8, younger ones will love the quirky illustrations. Many of us still hold a soft spot for the things we enjoyed as children when we enter adulthood. This means helping to support and encourage the love that a child may have for art and painting is a great thing to do. The amount of artwork that my children produce is astounding! It never ceases to amaze me that they can create and create and create and create some more. As an artful parent, I really love to give them access to make art as often as they like.

This is the children’s edition of Phaidon’s best-selling ‘The Art Book’, offering a guide to 30 great artists and their most famous works. It’s been designed for both adult and child to enjoy and talk about together. It’s accessible and clear, without being condescending. Thanks, Plum Print, for letting us try out this fabulous service for free! All opinions expressed are my own. This is one of my favourite art books for children. The illustrator Quentin Blake writes about 26 of his favourite – and very different – paintings. It’s a brilliant art book, which introduces kids to the stories behind each artwork. The artist’s additional characters and comments also urge children to use their imagination and look for their own adventures and stories in the pictures. It makes for a lovely gift, which you know will be loved and continually passed down the family. A classic.

Do you ever wonder what to do with all the artwork your children create? In this post, I’m going to show you how you can turn it into a beautiful kids’ art book! This is one of the most colourful and unusual children’s art books I’ve seen. It was written by MOMA curator, Sarah Suzuki and tells the story of the renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. It takes children on her quest to become an artist and cover the world – including its plants, people and sky – in brightly coloured polka dots. Just watch your walls afterwards! I also really like to have a tidy house and organizational systems so that every available surface isn’t covered in artwork! Our smartphone cameras do an amazing job making our photos look great in imperfect situations. We take it a step further and tune elements like white balance, contrast, vibrance, and saturation. As you can imagine, it took forever to sort through all their drawings and decide which ones were going to make it to the books, but it was a really enjoyable process. We did it together and had lots of fun looking at their early mark-making and primitive drawings, comparing them with each other at similar ages, noticing patterns and recognising traits of personality through their artwork.

For the other book lovers in your life…

The only question now is, where exactly can you find children’s books about art that are age-appropriate and fun for your little one? There are a lot of options out there, but here are some favorites to help you get started with your shopping. For me, the hardest part was selecting what to include. It was a nice excuse to sort through the portfolios of special artwork. I loved going through each child’s artwork with them to exclamations of “I remember when we studied frogs in preschool and I made that watercolor pond painting!” and “Oh yeah! My Sun Monster!!!!” For a lot of kids, there’s nothing better than sitting down with some paint, crayons, chalk, or markers to create their latest masterpiece. Caregivers can encourage their kids to lean more into that interest with some children’s books about art. Whether they want to learn about famous artists, practice new techniques, or simply get lost in a story about art, there are some incredible books for them to choose from.

Fast forward to a few days later and the most incredibly stunning book appeared on our front doorstep. The range of choices we have available at the National Gallery Shop makes for creative presents for kids of many different ages. If you’re a caregiver to a kid, you probably already know whether or not your child has a love for art (hint: if you have to throw away pictures on a daily basis because they bring home so many, then it’s safe to assume your kiddo is a fan of art). It’s a fantastic thing for them to be interested in because it allows them a way to express their creativity now and it’s also something that studies have shown can help them reduce and manage stress as they grow up. So, if investing in a few children’s books about art now will help keep them excited, then it’s definitely worth it.At the National Gallery Shop, we have an excellent selection of art books for kids, with a host of titles available that inspire the imagination and enhance young people’s creativity. This selection of arty children’s books includes a number of colouring books, with readers having the chance to colour in images of paintings by the world’s most famous artists. This includes a Claude Monet Colouring Book and a Vincent van Gogh Colouring Book. Additionally, there is the Famous Art to Colour book, which gives children a selection of different artworks to engage with. Best for: 6-10s who’ll enjoy travelling through the homes of history, and aspiring fashion designers When the lovely people at Snapfish challenged me to create End-of-School Year Keepsakes, I knew exactly what I was going to do. For a couple of years, I’ve been thinking of taking photos of their artwork and compiling them all in an album each so they could look at their drawings whenever they wanted. This book box is best for little eco artists and outside adventurers. Inside the box is an activity guide dedicated to making art inspired by and made from nature. It encourages children to find, observe and collect objects from flowers and blossoms to pebbles and plants. Then, to make and exhibit their own creations based on what they have found. It includes 2 foldable frames, an expedition envelope and a fold-out poster for displaying found objects. There are even ideas for activities that can be done during rainy days by looking out of the window!
