To some, it may appear like patina, but I find it a little cheesy. Also, I see a small gap between the day and date wheel, which is not typical for Seiko. Aside from that, my only other general wish is for a hand-winding movement, but because this is Seiko, I can’t be too surprised that the watch is sold without one. Sitting on top of the case, we have crystal glass. Whilst sapphire crystal is nice, it’s definitely not something we expect in a watch in this price range. As a dive watch should it has good water resistance. The minimum water resistance for a watch to be classified as a dive watch and not just a dive-inspired watch is 200m/20ATM, and this is exactly what the NY0085 has. In addition, it is alsoISO6425 certified. Powering the NY0040 is a Citizen in house movement, the Miyota 8200. This is a 21 jewel movement with a 21,600 BPH which many find to be more accurate than the Seiko SKX007, although this can cause quite the debate. This watch is a sporty tool watch with a very distinct design. Within a second, it can be identified as a sports watch, and in fact, it is built to last. With that said, if you are looking for a serious sports watch that can handle all kinds of different hardships you put it through, the Citizen Promaster NY0040 may just be the watch for you. Let’s look at what this watch is all about.

Let’s get this out of the way; both the Seiko SKX007 and Citizen NY0040 are good looking watches on the wrist. They are weighty and feel extremely solid. Both have presence but are extremely comfortable due to their median size. Speaking of size, while both are similar on paper, they certainly wear differently.Citizen is overall known for making affordable watches. But in relation to their price, they are widely appreciated due to their high, long-lasting quality. There are watch designs and models that can be recognized immediately. Models that have been around for quite some time and changed subtly over the years, if any. And this is a model that has been just that. In fact, it was first presented in 1997 and is impressively enough still in production today. The bad: Not too much at this price point. The strap is quite tough, and apparently takes a while to break in. The LHD crown is not built for using on this fat boys wrist. It’s a small screw down crown and it’s very hard to wind or correct something ‘on wrist’. Not a big complaint though. Particularly, you won’t get this feature from a Seiko watch like the SKX007. 4. The Strap The watch is presented on an Oyster-style three-link stainless steel bracelet with a safety clasp. The downside to many affordable watches is that the bracelet is the part that is compromised with the most, and to some extent, that is true here too. I can freely admit that this watch was never on my radar. However, being a student at the time the price was not one that I could even think about paying. I did know one thing — I wanted a proper automatic dive watch. Seiko and Citizen are two Japanese watch companies that have been duking it out for decades. Both offer watches at all sorts of price ranges but really bring in revenue through production of moderately inexpensive, yet high quality, timepieces. Impressively, each company manufactures in-house movements and most of its own parts. Due to economic pressures, both now utilize factories throughout Asia instead of solely relying on Japan, but I’ve never been able to tell the difference quality-wise no matter where the pieces are made. Seiko and Citizen are famous in many sub-genres of watches, but both have really done well when it comes to their divers. Here again, the two make dive watches with a wide range of pricing and functionality and are revered by both professional and recreational divers. As a result, the watch on its bracelet weighs just 110 grams, compared to more than 150 grams for an equivalent model in stainless steel.
