About this deal

Also, I mentioned in my post on raised beds that much of my current garden bed soil will eventually be moved around. When that happens, the clover will get mixed in as a normal cover crop would, and will improve the soil than as well. Doesn’t It Compete With Other Plants for Nutrients?

Special thanks to Max Floyd of Earth, Water & Wood for sharing information about micro clover lawns in the home landscape. The seed compost is fabulous to use and looks and feels good too. I sowed some 'Tom Thumb' lettuce seeds and some Lupin seeds last Saturday morning in an electric propagator. They germinated and were through the compost on Monday morning (are now about 20mm high and looking very healthy indeed)When growing white clover, farmers should see immediate improvement in the top soil. White clover’s extensive root system make the soil more friable, improving tilth and water infiltration. Fill the hanging basket halfway with Clover multi-purpose and leave enough room for the plant and its existing compost. Place the plant in the centre. On a side note, here’s a good read about polycultures being more productive than monocultures from a recent study at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science: Growing bags don't compare - these used to be filled with peat and were cheap, making them an excellent alternative. However, they are now mostly peat-reduced or peat-free and have fertilisers meant for growing veg.

Find out more about why you should buy peat-free compost. Is it true that I can catch Legionnaires' disease from compost? We test compost for three different tasks; sowing seeds, raising young plants and for use in containers. But the only way to know if a compost is good or bad is to grow plants in it and compare them - something we've been doing for more than 30 years.

There’s nothing new about it. People have been using clover as a cover crop for a long time. Masanobu Fukuoka wrote extensively about using white clover specifically as a living mulch, so he gets full credit for what I’m doing. Here’s a good article by permaculturalist Larry Korn (the man who translated Fukuoka’s book, The One-Straw Revolution, into English) about Fukuoka’s farming method. Where Did I Get The Clover Seed? Micro clover is fairly drought tolerant, requiring about 25% less water than conventional lawns to stay green. When first planted, water daily to speed germination and help establish a strong root system. Once established, water deeply as necessary to keep your lawn looking green. If you’re unsure how much water to use, test your soil using a moisture meter and adjust accordingly. Can you walk on microclover? Dry, clean bags that aren't torn or faded - in the garden centre choose bags that look new as the contents contain fresh compost. Bags that are faded or are heavy have been hanging around, getting too hot in the sun or soaking up rain, which will damage the compost in the bag. If possible, buy from a garden centre that keeps its compost in a covered area. You may see composts formulated for veg growing. These are very similar to multipurpose composts, but may have a slightly different balance of nutrients. Some are excellent, some are less good. Look at our grow bags results. Many people no longer want to buy peat compost as it's believed to damage the environment and add considerably to global warming. However, peat composts are still the most widely available composts in garden centres and are preferred by many gardeners.

Watch out for reformulated compost - manufacturers frequently change the mix of ingredients they use and the fertiliser, and this is speeding up as the ban on using peat comes ever closer. We can't recommend reformulated brands because there's no guarantee the new product will perform as well as the one we tested. Always use the images above to make sure the Best Buy compost you are buying is the one we have tested. This year we chose to only test peat-free compost. From 2024, you will only be able to buy peat-free compost in garden centres and DIY stores when the government introduces a ban on peat composts. We firmly believe you can get great results from peat-free composts and we haven't used peat in our own trials for many years. We have also included Moorland Gold composts which use peat recovered from lakes and dams after being naturally washed from peat heathland by rainwater. Fill the tray with Clover multi-purpose to just below the rim and tap gently until the surface is level. Portland landscaper, Max Floyd of Earth, Water & Wood, recommends mixing micro clover with dwarf fescues for an easy care option. Other seeds recommended for blending with microclover include: It should be able to withstand the occasional traffic involved in reaching into the garden beds 4. Nitrogen Fixer
