[22] Jane Rossington has said that she did not want to commit herself to another long run in the show, but warned Carlton it would be suicidal to kill Jill. Billboard Magazine. Nielsen Business Media, Inc. 100 (23): 6, 41, 78. 4 June 1988. ISSN 0006-2510 . Retrieved 27 November 2015. When television was young, it was ethereal. It danced through the air and was intercepted on its way into space by the nation’s sets and aerials. These days, the medium is more contained. It is streamed and collected in box sets. But some of those old programmes still retain a hold on the cultural memory. We remember Quatermass for terrifying a generation. We remember Cathy Come Home for changing the law on housing. And we remember Crossroads for being rubbish. Over the years the series dealt with storylines which were controversial for the times. A single parent working at the motel was hugely controversial in the mid-1960s, as was Sandy Richardson becoming a permanent wheelchair user after a car accident in 1972. The storyline was developed when actor Roger Tonge had himself become a wheelchair user off screen as a way to keep him in the series, thus becoming the first paraplegic regular character portrayed in a British soap opera. Soaps are not to be binged. They give us companionable fictional people with whom to share our lives. That’s why the marriages of Deirdre Rachid or the trials of Meg Mortimer are not like the problems of Anna Karenina or Madame Bovary, but have the same bumpy one-damn-thing-after-another quality of our own existences. Episode 2657 from December 1976 – Tish Hope organises the Christmas decorations while David discusses her upcoming marriage with Faye: a bit of domination will do you good in these days of sex equality.

In January 1988, the series was reduced to only two episodes a week, with Crossroads King's Oak finally coming to an end on 4 April 1988 (the Easter bank holiday). The last, extended episode saw the only remaining original character, Jill Chance ( Jane Rossington), riding off with her new lover John Maddingham ( Jeremy Nicholas). Asked what name she would give the hotel she would be running in her new life, the character remarked, a little sadly, "I always thought Crossroads was an awfully good name". Episode 3049 from November 1978 – Philip Bailey hounds Dr Butterworth, much to Marian’s distress. Helen has a bit of a blub and confesses to Doris that she’s actually on the pill. Bernard Booth’s authority is flouted when Benny brings a kitten he’s found into the kitchen. Recording for the show ended at Christmas 1987 with the final episode (a feature length finale) broadcast in April 1988 where Jill drives off into the sunset with her lover to open a "little hotel in the West" that she thought they could call "Crossroads".Episode 3056 from November 1978 – Adam, now co-owner in trust of Crossroads thanks to Hugh’s dodgy dealings, congratulates Meg on her business acumen. Shughie McFee, nearly trampled by Helen Booth in a speedy exit, warns Doris that she’s in Bernard Booth’s gunsights.
