About this deal

New ExpressConnect automatically joins the strongest access point in the office and directs bandwidth to critical applications, wherever you work.\ The graphics unit integrated into the processor will not be very appealing to gamers, but serious office users will have a low power consumption and almost six hours of battery life with the Intel HD 3000. The non-reflective WXGA display is a little too dark though for use outside or in bright surroundings. Narrow viewing angles, a tight color space, and low contrast all lead to a very weak display rating. In this test we use 100% on the CPU cores, monitoring their frequencies and chip temperature. The first column shows a computer’s reaction to a short load (2-10 seconds), the second column simulates a serious task (between 15 and 30 seconds), and the third column is a good indicator of how good the laptop is for long loads such as video rendering.

Tradition obliges. The Latitude E5420 Essential from the business line of Dell notebooks certainly lives up to its name. The 14 inch device is a solid notebook with matte high-quality surfaces, and top-notch input devices. Fingers fly across the touchpad and keys with ease and accuracy. Meanwhile users will easily forget that there is only a Core i3-2310M processor under the hood. Although this doesn't quite deliver the same performance of the newer Sandy Bridge Core i5 CPUs with Turbo-Boost 2.0. The base unit could only be bent minimally with considerable strength. The hand resting area and the base plate on the compact chassis lie firmly attached. Merely the area under the optical drive is a weak spot as usual, which dents considerably with the application of pressure. With Intel ® Adaptix™ Technology, prioritize your most important apps, so they open faster and perform better. As a part of the Latitude 5000 series, this notebook is built with environmentally-conscious bioplastics. It weighs 1.40 kg and has a profile of 19.3-20.9mm. This makes it far from the thinnest devices on the market, but we feel it is worth it (later you will see why).

Professionals and demanding users generally value the selection of ports very highly. The 14 inch notebook has everything on board that we would expect from a work notebook, without providing as many as a precision workstation would have. These include a screw tight VGA port, a PC-Card (PCMCIA) shaft, and FireWire. The older PC-Card standard, which has already gone out of fashion in the consumer world years ago (replaced by ExpressCard), is still popular in the business world. Using this special extension cards (mainly controllers) can be attached. The connection for fast external hard drives is also on board as eSATA, although there is no USB 3.0. Connect confidently: Stay connected with up to 450 Mbps LTE mobile broadband speeds. Wi-Fi 6E allows 7 additional channels (in 6GHz band) for more bandwidth which provides faster, smoother Wi-Fi, especially in high-density areas.* Travel with ease with new eSIM technology that connects to more global carriers without having to switch SIM cards.* The Dell Latitude 5420 is not entirely hopeless. It has a great keyboard, excellent connectivity, and good battery life. Smaller and lighter: We’ve shrunk the dimensions of the Latitude 5000 series without sacrificing power or performance. Its 1920 x 1080 resolution, matte display coat, and good contrast ratio make a decent first impression. To its credit, the display works well for its narrow intended purpose. It’s readable, resists glare, and is bright enough to use in any office.

In brief, stay away from the Dell Latitude 5420. This is not the work-from-home laptop you’re looking for. As far as wireless technology goes, the E5420 provides WLAN. The WLAN card uses the 802.11 b/g/n standards. Further to this the Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit controller is also on board. However, this doesn’t stop the Latitude 14 5420 to provide some computational performance to its users. Interestingly, the laptop is offered with both Comet Lake-U and Tiger Lake processors. Why? We don’t know. What we do know is that the 10nm architecture of Intel introduced a huge boost in performance. Not only when it comes to CPU-intensive loads, but to graphics power as well. So, getting the so-called “11-th Gen” processors would be a priority. Keep working with outstanding battery life plus intelligent settings to preserve power when you're running low. Choose from a 42 Whr battery for lighter weight or a larger 63 Whr battery for longer run time. Get longer battery life when you choose the Super Low Power panel, which consumes less power than a standard display without impacting the brightness of the screen.

These results come with an important caveat. Dell has updated the Latitude 5420 with models that offer new Intel Core processors and Intel Iris Xe graphics. We haven’t tested the Latitude 5420 in this configuration, but we have tested laptops with similar hardware. We expect the new models to provide a small boost in processor performance and a significant boost in graphics performance. Modern connectivity is provided by twin Thunderbolt 4 ports with Power Delivery and DisplayPort mode. These versatile ports can connect to a variety of USB-C or Thunderbolt devices, can charge the laptop, and can power an external monitor. Nothing seems wrong with the Latitude 5420’s touchpad at a glance. It looks spacious and its plastic feel, although not enjoyable, is hardly unusual for a Windows business laptop. The laptop dell Latitude 5000 series is compact in size but retains its power and performance. Up-level your presentation:Achieve professional presentations with the optional FHD webcam and high-quality microphones. Ultimate views: The firmness of the lid has also been a success. This could only be bent holding the edges to a small extent. The surface consists of brushed aluminum, and can be dented inwards in the middle. Fingerprints may be slightly visible, but do remain, and have to be removed with a cleaning cloth. Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day. Apple Silicon still has it beat, though. The MacBook Pro we recently tested handled 14 hours of our battery life, a full four and a half hours more than the Latitude 5420. The speakers sound powerful Intel® Adaptix™ Technology allows for prioritization of critical applications for improved opening speed and performance. Express Sign-in:
