About this deal

The Dometic CFX fridge is a top-loading, coolbox style portable fridge. The Dometic CRX is a free-standing fridge with a swinging door. The CFX can be moved around, whereas the CRX is designed to be permanently fitted into your campervan. How do you power a Dometic cooler? Though we’re only evaluating one product here, we evaluate all plug-in electric coolers based on these weighted metrics: The CFX3 isn’t the only winner here. The PLB40 provided the power needed for the 24 hour test and with enough left over for a further 33 hours of use, making the combination perfect for long weekend use.

Current draw and cooling efficiency are paramount to the off-grid adventurer. This held true during our Baja trip, as plugging in wasn’t an option at any destination. The 35-litre size will give storage for two people for a few days quite easily. And being so electrically efficient, it can easily run from solar panels during the day, and a decent leisure battery will last easily overnight making them ideally suited for going off grid. For this test, the fridges performed very well and kept the “ballast” completely cold during the 48-hour period. So much so that they somehow looked a little… bluer… by the end! Comparing the 24-hour consumption to the 48-hour mark, you can see that as everything got to its ultimate static cold temperature, the fridges became more efficient with time as long as they remained unopened. For a future test, I may incorporate an open/close procedure to the list to make it as realistic as possible to a normal camping trip. The most significant new feature presented, which also happens to be an industry first, was the ability to make ice. The CFX3 55IM model has a rapid-freeze plate that formed ice in a few hours in included silicone ice trays. The VMSO3 compressor’s efficiency combined with Active Gasket Technology assured low power consumption. A senior product manager stated a rule of thumb of roughly 1 Ah per hour to hold an internal temperature of 38 degrees F with an external temperature of 90 degrees F, with slight variations based on the model. Our overall impression of the Dometic CFX3 has been really positive. We have been using the Dometic CFX3 45 in our own campervan for a couple of years now and we’re super impressed with it. The powerful compressor technology makes this fridge much more functional than any coolbox we’ve used before, and the option to use 230V AC or 12V DC power makes it super versatile. The contenders for this test are two of the newest Dometic fridges in the CFX3 line, the 55IM and the 75DZ, and my original CFX50 that is about 5 years old. The 55IM is one of the most popular CFX3 sizes as it fits very well for most vehicle sizes. The 75DZ is the smallest dual-zone fridge that Dometic offers, and is a requirement for consumers that need a separate freezer option. The Test Parameters The CFX3 35 has a rated energy consumption of 352Wh per 24hrs . In other words, 29Ah will be drawn every day from a 12V leisure battery. With both compartments set to 5 oC , the CFX3 95DZ has a rated energy consumption of 1478Wh per 24hrs . This is equivalent to 123Ah every day from a 12V leisure battery. The Dometic CFX3 line seems to have it all: rugged dependability, high-end modern conveniences, energy efficiency, and good looks from a brand with a proven history in 12V coolers. The icing on the cake is the ice-making capability of one model.

And, most importantly, over 6 days of travel across rugged environments and heavy use by a large group, the CFX3’s never faltered. Mission-critical items like raw shrimp and Stolichnaya vodka were never compromised. The Dometic CFX3 fridges can be run from either DC battery power or from AC mains power. This means you can plug it into shore power , or you can run it off your campervan’s leisure battery . Otherwise, the Brass Monkey fridge/freezer range is also a decent choice. They are far cheaper than Dometic but still decent quality units.

Looking at the data, you can see there is a correlation between the size of the fridge and its overall energy usage. With the 55IM pulling almost 46Ah over 48-hours, you can easily expect to use the fridge over a weekend of camping without worry. On the higher end at almost 57Ah, the 75DZ might require a larger battery bank or an auxiliary energy source such as solar to keep it running trouble-free while stationary for a longer period of time. 24-Hours Easy-to-read High-Resolution Colour Display and soft touch buttons enabling seamless control and monitoring of cool box fridge performance.Dometic cooler fridges, such as the CFX3, use a compressor to keep the cooler cold. Most coolboxes use a thermoelectric method of cooling, but a compressor is much more effective. A CFX3 compressor can reach freezing temperatures and still works effectively when it’s hot outside. What’s the difference between Dometic CFX and CRX? The Swedish brand Dometic announced over the weekend the release of six new powered coolers. The CFX3 line, ranging from roughly 35 L to 100 L in capacity, promises to be the most rugged, advanced, and feature-laden set of electric coolers Dometic has ever produced. The interior of the new Dometic CFX3 has multiple cooling zones and includes an industry-first freezing plate to make ice The fridges were all loaded at the same time after being in the vehicle for a 24-hour period with the lids opened and unplugged to equalize all of the unit temperatures. They were loaded using uncooled “ballast” that were all stored in the same location leading up to the test.

The Dometic CFX3 is all you could ever want in a mobile refrigerator-freezer but with a hefty price tag. Easy-to-read High-Resolution Colour Display and soft touch buttons enabling seamless control and monitoring of cool box performance The Dometic CFX3 series has been expertly crafted to excel across a wide array of applications, establishing itself as the ultimate companion for diverse experiences outdoors. Whether you're embarking on a camping trip, heading to the beach, or engaging in any other outdoor activity, the CFX3 is engineered to meet your refrigeration needs wherever your adventures take you.The CFX3 comes with two power cables: a 12V cigarette lighter style plug, and a mains power 3-pin plug. For 48-hours, the fridges remained sealed. They were driven around with the windows open, cooling to ambient daytime temperatures. All three fridges experienced a period of time where the 4Runner was parked with the windows closed.
